My problem is that, when i load up any game, it runs for 2 seconds then the screen gets distorted, its hard to explain, i get green, red and sometimes other color lines running down my screen, i have alt-tabed out of the games, and windows was like that too. you can sorta see the windows screen, everything has lines running through it, but i know all the programs are still running and you can still open stuff...if you know where to click and what your clicking on. its hard to say, but i can try and give a better description if anyone needs it. Now im not sure if this is a video card problem or what, but I have an ATI All in Wonder 9800 Series, with all the correct drivers installed if that helps.
id appriecate any help you guys and gals can give me, thank you |

Do you have another videocard to try?
Has the card ever been overclocked?

Are you using stock cooling on the card? Make sure the HSF (heatsink and fan) on the card is making good contact with the GPU and if it cools the memory too then make sure contact is goo there too, no gaps. Sounds like overheating or dead memory on the card to me... _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

also make sure the fan is operating normally. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Alright, so i opened the case to take a look at the card, the fan works fine, and the connections looked good. I looked at the plug that connects into the card from the power supply, and noticed burn marks across it, the male port on the card seems to be ok, i cant move or shift it so i assume the connection is fine, but the female part you connect to the card has a burn mark. i cleaned out what dust there was, and put a fan right over my videocard. i did notice it would let me load up my games and even let me have a brief 5 or so minutes before the screen went back to shifting lines.
I wish i had the money to go get something better, but i know the videocard i have now is a pretty decent one.
so ill see what else i can do to maybe cool down my card, if it is overheating, which it might be. what could i do if it has dead memory on the card?
talk to you guys later, thanks for the help, again.

Burn marks on the power connector is NOT a good sign. Something over-volted. Either a power cap on the video card blew, or the PSU is failing and toasted the card. Either way, I would say the vid card is toast, and I would be looking at a new PSU as well. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

i would tend to agree with you here, FnF......the PSU could be a culprit......
in this case though...the card may not be shot....as it seems that addition of a fan helped the card perform longer.....maybe this IS a heat issue, combined with something else.... _________________

Eh.........fan working fine, card massively overheating within minutes, even with the side off and a household fan blowing into it, and a scorched connector...........not good signs overall.
If you want to try to sqeak a bit more time out of it, go to http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ and grab ATITool. Start underclocking the card (memory first, then core) until it runs smoothly. If underclocking less than 25% does no good, your card is burned. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Sorry for the double posts.
i just wanted to let fussnfeathers know that underclocking the videocard worked. its weird to think that underclocking your card makes it better (in this case) but it does and it lets me run games and other programs with no troubles. im saving for a upgrade and this shall help tie me over till then. thanks alot, i owe you.
i still cant explain why the card seems to heat up so rapidly or burned my connector, but with the fan, ventalation and underclocking, it has a longer span than previously.
thanks again |

Sound like the power connector was making poor contact. Poor contact = resistance, resistance = heat, heat = bad. It probably burned the power cap as FnF said. I had the same issue with a burned PCI card once, I fitted a CPU cooler on it (yes a processor cooler ) and it worked fine till I bought a new card (bout 6 months). _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Hello, just to add i had exactly the same problem (read my thread below). Replaced the PSU still didnt resolve it, now got a refund and a 7800GTX is on its way :) Seems like it was the graphics card, but ill update tommorow to see if the GTX works, if not its probably gonna be a mobo fault. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |
