I am in need of an opinion. I have a 2001 Pontiac Aztek that will not start. It is cranking over but will not stay running. My husband recently replaced the fuel pump and it was running fine. I drove it for a couple weeks with no problems. Now it is doing t he exact same thing again. Thinking the fuel pump was defective he returned it and replaced it again. It is still not running. Apparently from what we can tell the Schader(?SP)
valve is not showing gas when we test it. My husband seems to think it is a fuel system problem at this point but can't seem to find the problem. A few buds came over and they are stupmed. One had him pour gas under the hood and it started but would not stay running. It doesn't have a carb so I am not sure what area they poured it is. Can anyone help? Would be forever grateful!
Thanks |

I'm assuming this is an external fuel pump, I'm not familiar with the new Pontiacs. If it is, it's most likely a clogged line from the tank to the pump......since you say there is no gas coming out of the pump when the motor is cranked, that would be my guess. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

First off, check fuses and relays make sure they are working and fuses are not burnt. Also some cars have an " Emergency Pump Shutoff Switch or Relay" They are used in case of an accident and shuts off the fuel pump when the vehical crashes. Sometimes this relay/switch goes off even when you hit a bump or pot hole hard enough. (but then again the car would have shut off right after you hit that pot hole) Any ways its supposed to be in the rear of the car...its small and has a button on the top. Push the button down and see if it starts. ( Check the owners manual to see if this car has one befor you start looking for it. The manual will tell you were to look.)Secondly, check for spark. Remove one of the spark plug wires and a plug with it. Ground the plug some where on the engine and crank. (note: someone else has to be outside the car to see while the other is cranking. Also, Im not sure of the ignition system on that car. It might have small coils for each plug. So remove the wire off the coil, remove the coil and plug reconect the wire to the coil and crank.)
Check for fuel pressure. Trace the fuel lines from the fuel injectors untill you see a little cap along the lines.( It will kinda look look like a cap that goes on a tire valve.) Take the cap off, turn the igniton switch on then off, push the very tiny button in the center. (Danger: Fuel may spray out so protect your eyes and body. Your supposed to use a fuel pressure tool but if you dont have one or dont want to buy one this is the "other" way to do it. BE CAREFULL!!!!) If fuel sprays out fast then the pump should be ok. If not pump is messed up or fuel filter is clogged. (Note: Filter should always be replaced with new fuel pump. A clogged filter could strain a new pump and render it useless.) Another thing is the TPS Sensor (Throttle Position Sencor) could be bad or the Idle Air Control Valve could be bad. I dont know the spec to these parts right off the back and what pins your suppose to touch but your are to use a multimeter and check the resistance on these two parts. Like I said, I dont have book to tell you how to do it. Oh yeah!!! If the "Check Engine" light is on. If you can afford one, get an OBD II scaner. This is a good thing to have. It gives you an idea of whats going on more or less. Heck I thing they even sell them at wal-mart.
Hope this helps a little.

Get a pro to look at your fuel injection system, you may have a blocked nozzel. but first, as Nox said, check your filter. Disconnect the fuel hose from the injector system (assumption that its feul ijected as you said there is no Carb) get a container and put the end of the hose into it so any fuel will be caught in the container and turn on the ignition. Fuel should flow freely from the hose as Nox said. Now, check the color of the fuel, if its not the same color as it was when you put it in and there are no additives in the fuel then you will need to drain and flush the tank (just to rule out all possibilities). Refil the tank with clean fuel, change the filter, reconnect the fuel hose and see if you have any joy.
If no fuel or a strangled amount comes out of the hose then you probably have a bent or blocked fuel line, you can try to trace it yourself or just take it to a garrage for repair.
Fuel lines can be tricky, if you feel in any way uncomfortable working on it yourself then take the car to a professional. Cars are not toys, your life depends on a car functioning correctly so when in doubt leave it to a pro. The last thing you want is to be in an accident because of an incorrectly performed repair. If you manage to sort the car out yourselves then just test it arround quiet streets to make sure all is good.

First things first, did he replace the fuel filter when the pump was replaced? If not do this first thing. And since he is already under there doing this he can check the condition of the fuel lines. If they are crimped as Xal has said they will starve the engine of fuel. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

No pressure means the pump is shot again.
Only use AC Delco parts and pass on the aftermarket. _________________ Owner & Administrator

This is very very good advice on the brand of fuel pump to use in your GM vehicle.
Also when replacing the fuel pump make sure that the grounding strap is reconnected as the tank is reinstalled. If this is not done the pump will burn out much sooner than it should. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!
