I was at Frys today and i ran across a HSF assembly made by Vantec. Its the CCK-6012 1U Coller for socket 370/A. The Copper is pretty thick for its size. so I got an idea to use it for the NB on my Abit IC7-G. My only question... is copper better than aluminum for disanticepating heat? ( I Think So) Here are some pics of it.

Now this next pic is a close up of the copper HS. The file is big so not for Dial up.....I think...Its 114kb.

So what do y'all guys think?..Compaired to the original Abit orbe??? I wanted so opinions before I go on with the show.

Aluminum is better than copper at dissipating heat. Funny thing is, I know this from cooking, not computers...........a copper frying pan distributes heat evenly, without releasing it too quickly. An aluminum pan dissipates heat too quickly.

Now, copper is better at ABSORBING heat, which is why most high-end air cooled HSF's use a copper core with an aluminum HSF. The copper sucks up the heat, while the aluminum dissipates it quickly.

Its cool though..iI'll save it and find a use for it later. I'm just going to get a WB for my NB.

FWIW I use this on my IC7-G:

Under an XP-90 or CNPS7700 it doesn't need a fan to keep the NB nice and cool.

Actually, Copper has (depending on the alloy) roughly twice the thermal conductance of aluminum. Cu will absorb AND dissipate thermal energy at twice the rate of Al. Al and AL/Cu heatsinks are used to keep costs down, as Cu cannot be extruded and must be machined. In a given design, a Cu 'sink will always outperform (thermally) an Al or Al/Cu 'sink. Silver is a little better, but not worth the expense. Diamond is best!
