well, I gave the triangle thing to my geometry teacher... and he is stumped as of now... he cant figure it out... hmmmm

because the triangles aren't congruent. check the slope of the "hypotonuse" of all three triangles. you get 2/5, 3/8, and for the big "triangle" it would be 5/13. we'er assuming right angles, so the big "triangle" is a quadralateral, because the two smaller triangles don't have the same angle measures.

Actually, my boy, you are correct. 
The two triangles do not have the same angle, which is small enough to not be noticed. It's actually a trick of area, rather than math.
Look at the point where the blue triagle intersects the grid at the topmost point. Now look at the top picture, and notice that the red triangle, at that same location, instersects the grid at a lower point.
When you cut the overall canvas down to the size of the triangles, and think of each one as a square, you can see the difference. There IS no missing square, it's just moved location from the top half of the diagonally cut rectangle to the bottom half, due to the curve in the dividing diagonal line.

Correction, this was an ad that Sky (a UK satellite service) did for the Simpsons.
Just look at those faces, they're 100% Brit looking and whle the Russian Lada has its steering wheel on the left (understandably) the Volvo's steering wheel is on the right (UK).
