|
|
OK i have had my computer for about a yeah and a half and have replaced my PSU once. Now that being said for some reason my computer seems to just give me the finger for no reason. every time i use the cd-rom or dvd my computer just cuts the power but not completly. i cant just hit the on button and restart, i have to hold it and wait about ten sec let go and then push it again to get it to restart. Normally i would just chop this up to a PS issue but it also happens randomly while working on something. I thought it was a heating issue but i have my side covers off and and fans blowing into the computer and still happens!!!!!
Any suggestions or someone who has experience this before.

Sounds like perhaps you have a bad drive. Have you tried running it with only one drive at a time to see if it makes a difference.
I have an Asus board that would crash the IDE bus (just couldn't access a thing on it) once in a while. I ended up switching master to slave and slave to master on my dvd and a combo drive and it took care of it. _________________ .

check the board for blown caps, it's around that age. _________________ If time is of the essence,

Try a different CD drive. They are pretty cheap at NewEgg, less than $30 _________________ Asus P5WD2

I'm kinda leaning with Moebius here. It does sound like a bad power issue, but it's likely to be the mobo, not the PSU. Unfortunately, there's no way to test that, except to replace the mobo. You can dig around, and look for "leaking" caps. You'll see a tiny bit of slime on the tops of the caps if they're bad. (sometimes they don't blow completely, but the compound inside the caps gets contaminated after the cap "pops" a little bit, and starts losing conductivity). _________________ Big enough to scare you |

^^ FnF has a point, check the capacitors (the vertical cylindrical thingys on the mobo). But it still may be the PSU. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

from the symptoms you list, replace the psu with a quality unit of at least 400w. In this case I would look for an Enermax or a Seasonic. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Hmmm...Caps and FETs on mobo shouldn't lead you to believe IDE bus though. (aka cd rom use causing crash)
Before I questioned mobo PS circuits I would question vdimm and vcore voltages as well as look at the bios memory settings, since he's running good ddr333 in a HT machine.
My off the cuff guess would be that the psu isn't regulating well, therefore changing loads are crashing the compy because of nominal memory or cpu voltages. The cd/dvd roms are maybe just the load factor changing.
How about loading a mobo utility and giving us a few voltages. _________________ .

how about turning off "automatically shutdown on error" and see iff anything gets written to the error log.....or he gets a blue screen......
When you say USE the drive....do mean, try to read from it? or just open the door? _________________
