Woke up and turned on the PC this morning and got this error message: "Primary Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad. WARNING : Immediate back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent."

I just find it rather funny. I always try to get everything in order in my life after letting everything go crazy, and then I always get hit with something like this. I'm not really surprised the HDD is like 3 or 4 years old, and out of my old Compaq. I was planning on getting a new one anyway, but I'm low on cash at the moment. Think this thing will last at all, or is it almost dead?

Its hard to say. Just back up all your important files ASAP. When a HDD wants to go, it'll go.

Hmm I actually might be interested in them. Could I set them up in Raid if I wanted?

See what I had planned was getting like a 200GB for my main machine. And then put my 80GB into a spare PC I had laying around and either set it up as a server for my roomates or as a gaming server for another forum I frequent. But since it looks like this one is just going to die, I might take the 20GB off your hands.

it could die today, it could die tomorrow, it could last months. SMART errors are an indication that the drive is failing, not that it is dead yet. It is a sign to back everything up and replace the drive as soon as possible.

Ok man thanks for letting me know exactly what it means. I knew something was up when it would just freeze when the CPU wasn't even getting stressed at all. It's ok though as long as I don't try to do to much with it. Almost everything is back-uped, I just need to find an amazing deal on a HDD.

Spring Break is next week for me, so I'm going to focus on getting my HDD replaced and getting my little side project server up.

I have a 60gb maxtor that has been giving that warning for 2 years and it still works fine. I use it as a games and music drive and keep all the important stuff backed up but so far it hasn`t died.

UPDATE

I've got some good news, it stopped giving me the error.

But...it also doesn't recognize the drive anymore. Yay. :)

Lmao.

Actually it's acting weird. It's been hot the past few days and this apartment will not cool down at all. After the PC was off for a bit I started it back up and gave be the message but would still load. So now I just believe it's more prone to overheating. I'm still going to order a new HDD whenever I can though.

^^Definately. If you have important information burn a few cds. Don't wait much longer. The longer you wait, the greater the chance it WILL FAIL.

Ok so it finally just died on me today and I got a new one. I got a 200GB SATA Maxtor. This is the very fist SATA that I have used and it's not being detected for the WIndows setup. What exactly do I need to do? I went in the RAID utitlity and started a low level format. Will the format make it work?

Obviously you need to read you mobo manual, but there is a setting in the BIOS that does sata/pata/sata+pata or such. If you're doing the RAID thing will will need the Windows drivers for the controller, that also came with the mobo. You may even need a driver for sata single, again depending on mobo.
Best thing is to go to the manufacturers website and get the latest drivers and check out their FAQs in case there is something special with it.

Hmmm I don't have my mobo manual here at the moment. I'll check around the website to see what I can find.

What 2O said. ^^^^

Unless it's a new mobo, that has SATA2, then you need to install the SATA drivers for the ports to actually work.

Ok well when am I suppose to install them? During the Windows install? It just keeps looping on me. It asks for drivers for the drive then I Specify that they are on the floppy. It acts like it installs something then just asks me the same question again...

It's sort of annoying since both roomates comps don't have working floppy drives. So I've got to change mine out just to make a floppy...

Oh well I'll keep trying stuff.

Ok well after reading through the readme for the driver I know that I'm doing everything exactly as I should, it's just that Windows isn't doing what it's suppose to at the moment.

Ok well I have no idea what to do. Everytime it just won't install the drivers.

It asks for the drivers, I put in the floppy. It then says that windows has newer drivers so I tell it to just use the floppy. It acts like it installs something, then asks me install the damn RAID drivers again. All it does is loop, there's nothing I can do. Everything right now is just pissing me off.

Jesus Christ this is pissing me off. I have done everything I can think of about 5 times. Switching out SATA cables, changing SATA ports and whatever else. It just won't show up.

The HDD just won't show up at all for the Windows installation. I used the Maxtor software to double check that the drive is showing up. All the tests passed and said it was working. I then fully formatted the HDD hoping that would fix it, still nothing.

Maybe it's something with my bios? I don't have my manual, but the only option I saw was something between SATA, SATA Raid and Disabled. It's set at SATA. I just don't know what the hell to do.

Try setting the SATA port to legacy in bios.
