I really need some help, I am currently in California visiting my girlfriend. Her computer is doing some really weird stuff, my biggest problem is that when windows media player is open and I am in or opening another program the sound become garbled and sounds horrible, it also can slow down as well. Now this system is only 10 months old.

AMD 64 3000+ 939
1 gig ram

I've updated the audio drivers and updated windows media player from build 9 to 10. I am not sure on what else to do. And, I leave in 2 days! I really need to fix this without a reinstall. Please help!!

thanks!!!

Did you uninstall the drivers, before reinsalling new ones? If it's a botched driver, just patching over the top won't necessarily fix the issue.

What software has she installed recently? Have you done spyware/adware/virus scans?

What soundcard is it? Is it just with music, or is it with movies as well?

What version of WMP?

Bait my hook, bro..........bait my hook.

I've uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them.

As far as software, I don't think she has done too much recently. (of corse I live 1700 miles away, so somethings do get done with out me knowing.) The only things she has installed is pinnacle hollywood studio.

All scans check out ok.

It does it with any media file.

I've updated it from 9 to 10. 9 had the same problem

It's really wierd it puts a huge load on the system anytime something is being played through media player.

Please help soon, I leave in 2 days!!! I've got to get this figured out!

Ok............try going to the Library tab, and turning off "Monitor Folders" in the options. If she has alot of music, that'll drag WMP down after a couple of minutes.

Did this problem start when she installed Hollywood Studio? If so, uninstall it, and try again.

Look at this article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832732 , but I'm not sure if it will help, since you went to WMP10.

It COULD also be an SP2 problem...........try uninstalling that, and see if the problem disappears.

That's all I can think of, short of a reformat and reinstall.

I'll start with those options. I now notice that it's not just media player is all audio. ex. Aol opens and the "you've got mail" is garbled. Now, since I've uninstalled and reinsalled with no luck, do you think a bum onboard audio could be the problem?

No, because of the CPU usage. If it were a bad chip/card, it would just stop working, or only partially work. It's definitely a software issue. Since it's all audio, I would be leaning toward the Pinnacle software, since that injects itself into every type of audio file available on the system. Could be as simple as a bad audio codec............software like that is VERY touchy if there's too much legacy stuff already installed.

Instead of actually uninstalling the software, I'm going to just do a windows system restore. Looks like she installed the software on November 7th. Pinnacle put on at least 6 different programs and plug-ins. I have to wait till she gets off of work. (don't want to do anything with out her knowing. ) it would get me in trouble!

System Restore probably won't help, if the last restore point is after Nov 7th. I would just uninstall the program completely, to rule out any potential conflicts. You can always re-install it later.

That's no good....was anything else changed or installed at near that same time? There is always the option of uninstalling any other audio related programs that can be readily installed again. Hopefully that will bring something worthwhile.....

if pinnacle (or anything else) locks the sound drivers at a certain sample rate...it can cause similar problems to what youre seeing....and others too

for example.....when trying to play high quality audio through a card that only supports 44,100Hz.....it gets all sorts of screwy....

..just food for thought.

Well to let you all know I did figure it all out. It was a real funky driver issue. I've never seen a bum driver do the things it did! Thanks again for all your help!
