In the aftermath of the last few days I am finding it harder and harder to justify my support of D2OL. While the meaning behind the project is what I am looking for. The support from the admin for the project is not what it should be. And if it so easy to cheat the system then there is a major fault with their program and that needs to be fixed.
So this brings me to my question, do we stick it out with D2OL or do we move on to a new project?

The one I am looking at is rosetta@home. From what I have heard around the community, the admin of this project give alot of feedback about the work that is being turned in. Unlike D2OL where info is very hard to comeby.

As always I greatly appreciate your input.

weaz

EDIT: poll added *crosses fingers*

I agree with you weaze. I am a bit leary of what has been going on.
Also, although the idea of supporting research that is used towards curing diseases is good, the lack of feedback is disconcerting. One thing that has been in the back of my mind is that we could be exploited. Will any useful data gained from the project be used eliminate childhood diseases, or will it be sold to the highest bidding drug company? I've never heard of the Rothberg Institute prior to D2OL, so I don't know.

Yeah, I'm feeling the same way at the mo, it's not the first time I've had to deal with this kind of thing on a DC project. Seti@home was the first DC project that I joined a team, OCN hell spawns, and we stuck it out with seti, even with all the various "problems". It was a lost cause, things just got worse and eventually the berks at Bezerkely Uni decied to just screw up the project becuase they were getting too many results back too quickly.

If we change to a different project, it could be a bonus if we choose a project that can be run on slower computers, I'm sure there are people on our team that have machines that are working, but are just too slow for D2OL.

we should choose the next project carefully.

I will follow wherever the team goes.

It will of course be sold to the highest bidding drug company. Think about it. If we found a great candidate, only a major drug company could get it formulated and through the acceptance process, so it can be used to cure (or treat) a childhood (actually these are mostly lung) disease. The flip side would be, that it would give (remember this is non-profit) "the cause" funds to do more. More hardware and more coding and potentially better finds.
Never-the-less, I agree with SS that we should carefully study our next move, if one is required. Let's make it something worthwhile.

Oh well, I'm gonna go make margaritas, and worry about it next year. occasion7

TBH, I'm kindof burned out on linked-computing things for awhile, hence my not really participating much. While I like the idea, nobody has ever really given proof that (a) what we're crunching is actually drug/disease/alien life stuff and (b) none has ever posted any results. You would think after how many millions of cands done by D2OL, there would be at least a minor breakthrough, something to sortof make it worth my while. Right now, it seems like giving pennies to a homeless man..........it's not pinpointing his problem, nor is it giving enough to him to work with to make something happen.

I guess it ties in with what my mom and I were talking about earlier. Nobody really gives a rat's arse anymore. We were discussing a certain insurance agency here in the US, that was refusing pre-auths for treatement........not because the authorizations weren't correct, but because they weren't done on the company's website.

At the same time, my mom's boss' billing company was sending claims to the wrong agency, so no payments were coming in. Their response? "Oh well, tough luck. We'll fix it later". Before you say "change billing companies", they already have, three times.

Sorry.......ranting.

I guess, yeah. Research, do what you can to find a good cause, but personally, anything you choose will wind up the same way, somebody along the line will screw it up, just to look good in some random 'net post, and the whole thing will go to hell without ever actually doing anything good.

Don't hate me for this, but no more for me. I'm sticking to donating whatever I can to local organizations that provide immediate help, along with the research. Time has proven to me that the "free research" of these programs is wasted time.

the project that I mentioned earlier, rosetta, does provide info on how the results are being used.
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_medical_relevance.php

system requirements are at least a 500mhz cpu for windows and linux.

If we have the support I will start a TN team and we can start. As I am stopping D2OL as of midnight December 31 2005. And I want to continue to contribute to the greater good. I believe the current best project that fulfills that is rosetta. If D2OL comes out with a new client and has changed the way they are handling the project then I will probably lend them my computing power again.
One of my sub-teammates has been in contacts with Charles B at Rothberg and is going to relay that info to him as well as the new D2OL admin. So hopefully some good will come of all of this.

Perhaps a change is do...

BUT, remember, all this has come down during the holidays. Likewise, Charles Beckius was on a "forced vacation" do to all the hours he had to put in during the NAS problems. At the same time they have just brought in a new admin/coder. I believe we should give the benefit of doubt, and wait a few days to see how this is addressed.

Remember it's not how "faulty or not" the software really is, it's how ppl are. I'm sure most members of DPC are upset with the small number of members who would "cheat". As well as the "helmets down," everybody jump to team XS to take over attitude, isn't correct either. Then a little "disruption/cheating" and everybody jumps to FreeDC. WTF...this doesn't sound like the "overall good" thing to me, rather little ego's getting in the way.

I stay put for a few days, let the dust settle. Then see where I'm at. If we can't as a team find a reasonable project... then ebay goes my parts. It's just extra maintenance to me, a way to keep older puters being useful. my 2¢

I tried for the poll twice so I will put it here instead.

Should we as a team.....
A- stick it out with D2OL
B- go to Rosetta
C- go to F@H
D- find something else.

This is sound advice. After much thinking and chattering we have decided to support D2OL until something else is found or have fully decided to stay with D2OL. So more power from the BWB camp will be coming in the next little bit.

Well nuts. I like the concept of running a DC concept. It rationalizes me building up my computer, even though I don't have the time to game or actively use it intensively aside from some graphics programs. I guess it would send a message if we were to leave in some respects, but on the other hand, how much different will other projects be? I guess if weaze and others can identify a project which is significantly more worthy of our support.

I cast my vote toward Rosetta as long as that is the decision of the team collectively.
