Internet Speeds are way diff on my PCs

I get a 5mb Max plan from roadrunner. I have two comps hooked up on a linksys wireless network. The computer with download speeds of 2177kbps and upload of 354kbps (test by SpeakEasy) has the faster speeds. My other pc is as slow as dial-up. The mystery is that the one with the faster speeds is a much worse computer: celeron cpu, 256mb ram, and ME OS, the other: P4, 512mb ram and XP Pro. They both have Anti-virus software, although different versions(The pc with the slower connection has Norton Antivirus 2006, the other has Norton 2004), and they are both getting "excellent" signal strength from the router. I don't know what the problem could be. It can't be the modem, probly not the router, and my overrall connection is good, hence the 350kbps upload. Any ideas what could be slowing down the one computer?

get rid of norton on both computers and install AVG.

Norton is the #1 cause of slow computers and internet connections out there.

also... Unless you have them set with a router. Which ever computer uses the internet first usually gets the most bandwidth. there should be a option that allows you to limit bandwidth to each computer... If this is not what your talking about than I dunnoo..... Perhaps maybe its a driver issue.. Have you loaded all chipset and LAN drivers? maybe the ports are set up differently. Just a few things to throw out.

heh heh...just get a KVM for the monitor issue....;D

anyway....yes nortaon CAN cause a huge syste, performance drop....it weazels (sorry weaz) it way into all sorts of places that keep track of what your computer is doing...cuasing precious resources to be used for monitoring, as opposed to you

I noticed a big increase in performance after removing the 2044 edition i had....although i cant say my system is the same as yours....everyones reacts differently.

Ok, I plugged my comp directly into the modem (it's only 10 feet away) and I'm getting identical speeds as the other pc was over the wireless network. It's not Norton to my relief. Now I need to know what to do to my wireless router so I can get good speeds on both pc's. It's not signal strength btw. Are there some settings which I can get into that will help?

Also, what is a KVM?

Okay now i totally messed up my router. I can't connect to it wirelessly from either system. It's my fault because I went into the settings by typing 192.168.1.1 in my browser and I changed some stuff. Right after I couldn't get any signals from it. Then I plugged it directly into one pc via ethernet and I can connect to the internet but I can't access the settings anymore. When I type in the default IP address 192.168.1.1 I get a "page cannot be displayed." But I get the internet so why can't I access the router's settings?

Because you changed the routers default gateway setting. (the routers itselfs ip address)

In network connectons >>local area connection>>right click to Status>>in the support tab will be a different default gateway address.

Use this new address now to access your router.

^^^ What he said. Or you can try just typing http://dslrouter into your browser, that should use whatever gateway addy you changed it to.

Once you're back in, you should look for Backup/Restore or similar, and reset your router to the default settings.

ummm... I was going to access the router check out whats going on cause I never looked and it asks me for a password when I never set one up... any ideas?

Sickofsoyo, type "admin" in the password box and leave username blank.

I looked up the default gateway and typed it in the Internet Explorer and it came up with We Can't Find "65.25.224.1" and an MSN search box. Then I tried Netscape and at least it gave me more direct information "Connection was refused when attempting to access 65.25.224.1". I have actually tried this before but same results. Fussnfeathers I tried your link but to no avail, but Thanks. Maybe the router is actually broken. Any other ideas? Thanks

P.S. I'm not against buying another wireless router so suggestions would be appreciated. I just think I should know what the problem is on this one before messing up another one.

65.xx.xxx.x is your ISP's default gateway. Yours will start with 192. It's the last entry under the "support" tab. Try clicking the Repair button on that tab, and see if Windows picks up whatever you changed your router to.

That's what it looks like and I repaired it. Is there supposed to be one that starts with 192?

Yeah, you have an internal IP for each machine connected, the default gateway it's showing is if you didn't have a router. Odd.

Hmm... I would just say that its a incompatibility speed issue with the different components. Didnt mean to sound like an idiot. But there is the issue with the actual IP adress rather than the one assigned by your router.

yeah it's fine i'm sure neither of us were really serious.
So it looks like my router is messed up. Any good suggestions on a new wireless router?

I have a D-link and a Belkin card adapter. So maybe i should get a d-link router and another d-link card to replace the belkin card so they would all be d-link. At least that way I'm sure to get the new router and new card to work together. I think I might have messed up my current card too but that wouldn't have anything to do with not being able to access my router's settings.

do a manual reset on your wireless router. This will restore it back to factory settings and then you can use your standard info again to be able to set it up like you need it.
To do this there should be a small hole on the back side of the router. Power down the router and use a small wire (straightened paper clip) to push the little button. You may have to depress said button for 3 or more seconds. (this is kinda like clearing the cmoss on your motherboard). Then once you have that taken care of, power up the router and proceed as normal.

Well I've been manually resetting it since I got it 2 years ago because it occasionally dropped the signal, and that's the first thing that I thought of when I recently started having problems so I tried it. Obviously it didn't work. But when you said:

Are you trying to access the router settings wirelessly after a reset, or wired.

Always, do an initial setup (or after reset) from a wired connection.

Yes you need to try and connect to it via a WIRED connection to connect to the settings. (you can connect wirelessly but you cant make reliable settings changes. )
