When I try to play videos sometimes they don't work...I guess they work but they aren't clear. There is just a bunch of different colors while the video plays. For example, it even happens on the internet I was trying to watch a video from airliners.net and there was movement but everything was in yellow, red, green, and blue. I don't know too much about video stuff, but I figured it was a codec problem. I downloaded all the newest codecs from the divx website and still some videos won't play. What gives?

It's not necessarily a missing codec, it's more likley that you have too many codecs installed, and they're conflicting with each other. All you need is one Divx codec, one Xvid codec, RealPlayer, Quicktime, and an AC3 codec. I had the same problem awhile back, turned out to be a conflicting Xvid codec that was messing everything else up.

Uninstall every codec you have, then just reinstall the bare minimums.

Some of those packs are alright, but since you really don't know the guy who packaged them, you don't know if they're all compatible, if they're all working codecs, or if there's some nifty little trojan stuck in there with them.

I prefer to just get the ones I need, and not clutter everything up.

exactly why I use the Matroska pack. Its got what I need and nothing else. Even allows you to download the realplayer codecs, so you dont need to install Real Player. Kinda nice. But I dont know if its alright with RP to do that... I dunno

Still good

Yeah, it's fine. RP themselves install just the codecs for IE, and I believe you can get PR-authorized codecs for WMP and the rest.

Where do I get those codecs, from the websites of divx, xvid and so on...
On divx I only saw the whole package to download.

try this site for any decoder you might need.

I dont mean to advertise, but try the Zoom player too. I have had no problems whatsoever using this media player.

Unless they've changed it, you can just install the Divx codec without the player. Xvid, http://www.xvid.org/ , just grab the latest installer. For everything else, http://free-codecs.com/ is a good site. You'll want the AC3 filter.

For the most part, WMP does a good job of downloading the majority of codecs you need.
