|
|
i have a KT400 MOBO for AMD 2400 on which i am running a 120gb ide phase HD. but i want to extra harddrive.. thinking of buyin a new one... may be 300gb but this time SATA drive instead since i am also thinking to make a new computer in next 6 months. meanwhile i dont want to buy another IDE Hard drive.( since it is old and slow tech). MY question is is there is a way to use IDE supported mobo to run a SATA hard drive which is 250 GB - and up. i have heard of SATA to IDE converter but dont know if they are going to work. so if possible plz word of support and help a guy out. if any one had any exprierence with it please let me know... i would really appreciate that. _________________ ----------------------------------------

actually, the IDE drives are not that much slower, you may not even notice the difference. The RPMs are mostly the same except for the raptors, 10,000. The only difference is the SATA is 150 mb\s and IDE is 133 mb\s I think... not sure. There are certain adapters you can use to convert IDE to SATA, I have not used them, but using a SATA PCI card would be a better solution. You could put it in your new computer and then get a 2nd hdd and run them in a RAID array and have more ports for upgrades. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

There are converters to use a PATA drive on an SATA mobo, not entirely sure about the other way around.
Anyway, you won't notice any difference in speed between a current PATA drive and a new SATA. You're not even touching the 133mb/s limits of PATA with a single drive, and barely touching it with two Raptors in RAID0. The fastest regular SATA drive available (non-Raptor) only hits 55-58mb/s in a single drive.
Getting a PCI card, rather than a converter, is a good idea. However, be aware that you'll be using the PCI bus then for your new drive..........which is older and slower tech than current PATA standards. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

so u guyz are sayin that i should buy a IDE drive ... wht will happen when i am making a new computer and then the new mobo has sata capability only and i am stuck with IDE. yea i do know that there is not much speed difference but hey one the reason i am trying to get is because of new MOBO requirements. _________________ ----------------------------------------

You're looking at a PCI controller card. Plugs into a PCI slot, and typically has 4 SATA ports, to allow you to run a RAID array.
Don't worry about mobo compatability, PATA connectors will be on mobos for quite some time.........since the possibility of anybody releasing an SATA optical drive is pretty slim. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

now i am thinking since i am not going to be using HD speed why dont i just get an IDE drive. i dont know i am kinda confused. plus i was thinking is it possible to use my 120GB ide WD HD with 300gb Seagate ( SATA) to put on RAID. i dont know how RAID works but i have an idea that it makes the data transfer faster between the HDs. is that right.? _________________ ----------------------------------------

No, I dont believe you can use your 120 and 300 in raid. They have to be the same exact drive for it to work. The raid mirrors the data on both drives making READING faster. If your comfused with anything else, post your specific questions _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Well, I eat my shorts on the optical drives...............
No, you can't use two different size drives for RAID0, only for RAID1 (mirroring......which you don't want to do). And no, you can't use one SATA and one PATA in any kind of RAID setup, they have to be on the same interface. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

I suppose it would go either way.
If it were me, and I were planning on upgrading......oh wait, I just did that.
What I would suggest is to hold off buying a new drive, since you plan on rebuilding relatively soon. Then buy a drive, move your 120gb to a storage drive, and get a killer SATA boot drive. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
