|
|
I bought this monitor less than a month ago but had yet to try any games. Although I was quite pleased with the colors and general static graphics, the time came to install a game (Fahrenheit a.k.a. Indigo Prophecy) and check out how it handles the graphics.
Well to say I was disappointed is an understatement... this monitor is supposed to have 12ms response time and all the reviews I've read are raving over how great it is and how fast it is etc... so I was puzzled when I saw that in 1st person mode the image blurred into a fuzz every time I moved around the mouse... needless to say fast games are next to unplayable I guess... then I noticed the same thing on DVD playing.. objects or people would leave a small ghost behind them during sudden movements...
this is all very stressing as I shelled out 600 euros for this thing and I expected it to perform as described... does anyone know about this or have this monitor? is this a defect of my panel or it is a known problem of this model??
I'd apreciate your help! |

I dont know about that monitor, but I would say adjust your refresh rate, and change the relsolution. I dont have that much experience with FPDs so maybe someone else can better help you. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Agreed. Your monitor is a 1280x1024 resolution, and from my experience with Sony, it'll only look good at that resolution. Make sure your games are set to 1280x1024, and you should be alright. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

^^what they said^^
Also if you are running DVI try the analog and vice-versa, see if that changes anything. Refresh @ 75 and 1280x1024 size in games and all.
That monitor should look pretty good. If none of this fixes it, I would consult with Sony ASAP, and document your displeasure. _________________ .

thanks for the help but it is indeed set at 1280x1024 and connected via DVI (default at 60hz) ... it's very distressing...
I'll try the analog cable, but the only reason I got this over it's cheaper sibling is the DVI connection... |

It's set that way in Windows, but how about your games? Most default to a lower resolution, you have to manually set them for your desired res/refresh. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Well, then set the refresh to higher than 60Hz. Just because it is DVI doesn't mean you cannot change the refresh rate.
Set the refresh rate to 70Mhz or high if it is capable of it. _________________ Owner & Administrator

well, the game I tried was also set at 1280x1024 and the refresh rate is locked at 60hz for this monitor at least in DVI (I also tried the VGA cable but saw no improvement in the ghosting effect...)
the thing is, since the time I noticed it in the DVD and game, I started noticing it in regular windows tasks.. like moving objects around or in a (even slow) circular motion, when it's a dark object against a light background, there is severe trailing... also when a light object get dragged against a darker background, it looks like it fades at the edges ...
hell, this monitor behaves more like a 25ms than a 12ms...
does anyone have a 12ms 19' monitor? are these issues normal? |

You will have to get a refresh rate override program to change the refresh rate during games. This overrides the videocard driver's control on the refresh rate.
Also, do you have the proper monitor driver and do you have the latest videocard drivers? _________________ Owner & Administrator

A 25ms monitor shouldn't do what you are describing.
Also..disable any "font tuning" programs you may have running. _________________ .

25ms will ghost pretty bad. You want below 20ms for less ghosting.
Also, his monitor is 12ms which shouldn't ghost at all. _________________ Owner & Administrator

My 25ms Samsung barely ghosts at all.................it depends on the monitor.
And Sony only lists one-half of a full cycle as the response.........techically, it's a 25ms monitor, same as mine. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

True, it depends on who/ what type of rating is being used. Some manufacturers lie better than others.
I was just saying, that what he is describing sounds seriously sick.
But, certainly do not buy your typical 25ms LCD and expect to game cleanly with it.
Are we actually talking ghosting here, or perhaps crappy frame rates? What video card are you using? And yes....you can see that even in dvd video...particularly PAL framerates. _________________ .

It does sound a little extreme, even for a 25ms display. I do notice that my LCD isn't as "smooth" in DVD's, but it's more of a matter of being an LCD than any ghosting........if that made any sense.
Can you exchange it for another one, see if it does the same thing?
And yeah, what vid card are you using? _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Well holy heck, GREAT INFO!!!
Then this story is closed, it is ghosting because because of its high pixel response time. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Could be...........it could also be an issue with Sony's glossy screen. I tried one, gave me a headache. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

my graphics card is an MSI 6800
well if it's a 25ms, sold as a 12ms using marketing tricks then I'll demand a refund or an exchange... this is just ridiculous...
I replicated with Photoshop the sort of ghosting I get... it's not exactly like that, as each object leaves a diminishing trail instead of a whole ghost image but you'll get an idea.. (note: the blue line does not ghost at least visibly, but I forgot to exclude it from the blur effect in Photoshop)

What resolution do you have it set to again.
If icons are blurry, make sure you have set the resolution to 1280x1024 and read the manual and see where the auto configuration button is on the front of the panel. _________________ Owner & Administrator

that's easy for anyone living in a country where customer service and respect is a word taken seriously...
over here (Greece) Sony doesn't give a flying f**k.... I am sending it back anyway, but I'm pretty sure they'll say it's find and dandy and that I've wasted their time...
anyway, we'll see how it goes... |

Posted: Fri Nov 04, 2005 1:08 pm Post subject: Maybe we have the same problem |
|
|
I purchased the hs95p a few days ago and I have two problems with the monitor. I returned the monitor to Circuit City which saw the problems on their system and I recieved a new monitor which also failed the same way. However the monitor at Circuit City (6 months old) and also one at Best Buy (6 months old) did not have the problems. I contacted Sony about the problems which they admited should not be in the monitor, but eventaully they closed the case indicating that they don't have any idea what may be causing the problems. I tried the monitor on my two systems (one with a GeForce FX 5500 and the other with an ATI Radeon 7200 chip set) on both the VGA and DVI ports with the same results. I think a bad batch of monitors have arrived on the market.
Since I'm not a gamer, I don't know if we have the same problem but there is some indication that they may be the same problem. The first problem is that the backlight dims and brightens when objects are placed on the desktop (desktop must be a solid color not the textured color like the default XP desktop) in the Game or Movie mode. It works without problems in the PC or Auto mode. The problem can also be easily reproduced by starting the 3D Flowerbox screen saver which will cause the backlight to dim and brighten as the object rotates and moves about the screen.
There I tried to find a work around for this problem and discovered something interesting. I tried to change the preset settings (backlight, contrast, and brightness) in the Game mode to equal the default settings in the PC mode but this also failed even though the screen was darker. I then changed the preset PC mode settings to be the same as the default Game mode and the problem didn't occur even though I have a bright screen. This indicates that there is an unconfigurable feature in the Game and Movie mode that is not in the PC or Auto mode. What could that be? After thinking about it for a while, I thought about my Sharp 45" LCD which also has a 12 ms response time. The TV allows me to change the 12 ms response time to 16 ms response time. Why would I want to do that. The answer is that basically still or nearly still images display better at 16 ms at 60 Hz. So I expect that Game and Movie mode is suppose to work at 12 ms and PC and Auto mode is supposed to work at 16 ms. In my case, I think that when the 12 ms is turned on, it fails and causes a power supply drain causing my problem.
The second problem that I am seeing has to do with scrolling. When I scroll a document, the text in the document dims and brightens. At first I thought it was caused by an extemely slow response time. Then I thought it was caused by power supply drain. But after putting the two problems together, I changed my mind back to the slow response time. I just don't think that the monitor is even performing the 16 ms response correctly but is responding somewhere around 50 ms. |

While searching the internet, I found others complaining about the HS95P. One stated that it was the bigest wate of money he ever spent. I e-mailed him and asked him about his experience. He sent me the following link about the problem. I think you'll find it interesting.

Interesting.
From what I read (and I'll research tomorrow, after I get some sleep), Sony's gray to gray measurement is approximately 35% faster than the typical on to off (black to white) measurement that other companies use. Which would make the newest Sony LCD's closer to 50ms response time.
To be honest, the only reason I'm not dismissing this out of hand is because Sony is also doing some very non-consumer friendly things in many other aspects. For example, the PS3 is shipping with a non-standard networking setup, so it's touch and go as to whether you'll be able to use it with a router, or even with anything other than Sony's upcoming ISP. Star Wars Galaxies, my favorite game of all time, has just been raped by Sony to badly resemble WoW, despite the complaints of the 10,000+ players in the game.........in fact, we were told to "live with it, or leave, we don't care".
I'll be digging into this monitor thing closer..........trust me......I'm really starting to dislike Sony. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
