Nice review. From the looks of the graphs, its a HIGHLY effective cooling solution given its traditional HSF format.
I think I'd throw the obesity of the unit under the "CONs" list in the conclusion. I am never fond of the idea of having a CPU cooler that weighs double what the manufacturers suggest.
How was the sound level of the unit at idle speeds when the motherboard is allowed to throttle the fan down some? I can imagine even half speed (1200 RPM) would be MUCH quieter. How does the sound level compare with the stock intel?
(sorry about all of the questions, mojo.....I just love to learn. That's why I am at school! ) _________________ |¤| |

Agreed there..........it's loud, and heavy, and really kinda overpriced for a standard contact HSF......considering the XP90 is going for $30 these days, and add a quieter fan for $15 or so. Plus the sheer size makes it hard to fit alot of mobos..........I'd be hard pressed to recommend it, over other cooling "solutions".
Looks to me like another Fatal1ty branded piece of hardware.........cool (no pun intended) but really not worth the money, unless you're going for a "branded" PC. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Thanks! I reviewed the cooler as it came out of the box. Zalman usually includes a "fan mate" device to adjust fan spped and noise with their quiet coolers. Since the FAtal1ty sells without a fan mate and has a higher-speed fan installed (compared to their CNPS7700 series cooler has a 2000rpm fan), and is marketed as a maximum effort cooler, that's how I reviewed it. However, at around 1600 rpm the fan becomes essentially silent and the cooling penalty for this is only 2-3C. At full speed, there is not much difference in noise produced by the zalman vs. stock intel, however, the intel fan is more "whiney" compared to the zalmans noise which is of a lower frequency. |

Having used both the XP-90 and the Fatal1ty, I'd have to say that, for the money spent the XP-wins, but the Zalman has a much better mounting design and has universal mounting capabilities. The Fatal1ty is a tarted up 7700 series cooler with a faster fan, and the 7700 can be had for less money than the Fatal1ty, making it very attractive, but I didn't have one to review. While the Xp-90 is certainly lighter, it won't fit a 775 socket without an adapter and it's 478 mounting leaves a lot to be desired. Good cooling. For mounting reasons alone I'd give Zalman the edge here, even for more money.
Then of course there's the blood red fins.............. |
