I have been running my computer on my house network for a couple of days ago and all of a sudden it no longer recognizes the other computers and the network printer. The internet works fine and Itunes is picking up the other computer's itunes. I tried resetting the data network setup and nothing.
I have Windows XP Pro and the 2nd XP home, the third also XP pro.
Kinda stumped
sry if here are any typos, trying to do this on a TV cause I can't get to my computer monitor in the corner... knee problem. poss. PLC tear. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Ok, that's beyond my expertise.........
Have you tried switching the cable from your machine to another port on your network hub? Or changed the cable?

I have tried switching the cable from the hub around and nothing changed. I don't have any other cable to try. Using a 50ft and a 7 ft cable. Would that have anything to do with it? My brother's computer is even further and it still connects to the other computer... _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Sounds like you are having a NetBios problem. If you can ping another computer (from the problem computer) by its ipaddress but not by its name then it is a netbios problem.
A few things to check:
1- "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is turned on in the TCP/IP Advanced settings, WINS tab. You may want to change it from Default to enabled just in case.
2- The Computer Browser service is running.
3- The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is running.
4- Your network connection has Client for Microsoft Networks checked.
A Node Type of Peer-to-Peer can also cause this problem. Run ipconfig /all from the command prompt to check your node type. A Node Type of unknown is said to be ok. |

^^^^ agreed....can you ping at all?
Could be a name resolution issue here.....is there a server in the house? or just a workgroup network?
also...ive seen cables go bad without touching them.....you never know....you got cripmers and some rj45 ends? _________________

ok... I have no idea how to do any of the things you guys just told me. I know to ping echo requests have to be turned on. Otherwise, I'm lost...
I am a network noob. and it is just a couple computers networked... no server. No I dont have and ends or cutters. The internet works fine so I dont think it is the cables. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Is this as simple as the "workgroup" name may have been changed when doing a software install?
Your home network has a server...it's the router....it is a dhcp server and supplies addresses and passes dns addresses to all computers connected to it. That makes the internet work. The fact that you are not connecting to other computers is prolly based in a name issue. They all should have the same "workgroup" name. Typically "MShome" or "workgroup". They each must have individual computer names such as "bedroom" and "kitchen" and "office."
If you look at the properties of "my computer" there is a tab called "computer name" it has both pieces of information in it. _________________ .

You need to know both the ipaddress and computer name of the computer you are going to ping. Computer Name can be found by right clicking on My Computer and choosing properties the name will be on the Computer Name tab. Your ipaddress can be found by typing ipconfig in a command prompt. Type exit and hit enter to exit the command prompt. For my example I am going to ping the computer video at 192.168.51.4
Now goto the computer that can't browse the network. Type cmd into the run command and click Ok. This takes you to a command prompt.
First we ping by ipaddress
C:\Documents and Settings>ping 192.168.51.4
Pinging 192.168.51.4 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Ping statistics for 192.168.51.4:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
then by computer name
C:\Documents and Settings>ping video
Pinging video.home.pri [192.168.51.4] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.51.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Ping statistics for 192.168.51.4:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
and now if I ping a computer name that doesn't exist
C:\Documents and Settings>ping blah
Ping request could not find host blah. Please check the name and try again.
Hope this makes enough sense for you. |

Pinging "IP address" with 32 bytes of data:

they all get their IP adresses from the switch. The ip addresses are all the same except for one digit at the end. I tried another computer on our network running XP rpo and it worked fine. The only one I could not ping was running XP home. I was able to ping my computer with the one running home. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

hmm...
So Computer A with XP Pro can't use network neighbor hood to browse the network for the other compters. A can ping B but not C.
Computer B with XP Pro can browse and connect to the shares on Computers A and C. B can also ping A and C.
Computer C with XP Home can also browse and connect to the shares on A and B. C can ping both A and B.
*Note:A firewall can block pings requests (ICMP echo requests)
Is this the situation so far? |

computer A cannot use network neighborhood to browse B + C
Computer B + C can browse each other.
Computer A + C cannot ping B
computer A + C can ping each other's IP's
No computers can ping using Names
All Firewalls Disabled
A= XP Pro
B= XP Home
C= XP Pro _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Ok, think I understand more now.
On Computer A run ipconfig /all from the command prompt (cmd in the run box).
Look in the top section Windows IP Configuration, you will have to scroll the window up a bit, what is the Node Type listed as? Might want to look at all 3 computers. |

On Computer A lets enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
You will find this setting on the WINS tab of Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
The advanced TCP/IP Settings window is reached by clicking the advanced button in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window for you Local Area Connection (ie your network card).
All of the above is reachable via Network Connections in the Control Panel.
Restart the computer after this change is made and see if you can now browse. |

Alright then lets force computer A to the hybrid node type.
Copy this into a text file called h-node.txt on the desktop.
| Code: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
"NodeType"=dword:00000008 |
Rename the text file to h-node.reg.
You should now be able to right click on the reg file and select merge.
After this file is merged you must restart the compter. |

If I install that into the registry, will I be able to remove it if it does not work?Also, I got onto the 3rd computer fo find that with a node of unknown also... I had to tell my brother to do check it while he was on it. Is there a way to change the hybrid to unkown or is it better to have it set as hybrid? _________________ P4 3.2ghz
