This card does overclock really well and with only half the pipelines of the X800XL, it really held its ground. _________________ Owner & Administrator

| Bought the GTO version of this card and at fan speeds any less than 100% it has a really irritating clicking noise. So far HIS and Arctic Cooling seem unable to reply to requests for help! |

| Unfortunately I have tried three separate copies of the card and they all have the same problem. There is a suggestion that HIS have used a version of the Arctic Cooler that has this problem and that I need to change the cooler to Revision2, but that really annoys me as they should fix it. Their customer care sucks as they do not respond to any requests for support. |

I have made a recording of the sound but must apologise as I can't see how to post this on the forum! It is quite big, 6mb, and you have to turn up the volume to hear it whilst ignoring the odd click and pop from the seek head on the hard drive.

Learn a new thing every day - thanks. Well sort of learn I am still not sure if the link below is correct for you to get at the file in question. I have a feeling I am supposed to direct you to my home page on Putfile but it is not too clear how to do that. If you can't get at the file tell me what i am doing wrong and I will sort it. Thanks for your help on this.

I hear two noises, one sounds a bit like a microphone held up on a windy day, the other, which is the one I am concerned about is a steady clicking/buzzing noise in the background which sounds a bit like those insects that look like grasshoppers and make this noise rubbing their back legs together. Does that help.
Just to remind you this noise stops as soon as I set the fan speed to 100% using the HIS iTurbo software. At any other speed between 52-99% the noise comes back. Incidentally the level of the noise is pretty consistent at any of those settings
Bt the way there is definitely no insect inside ny PC |

I'm surprised you can even hear that over the noise of the PC. One possibility to look at (and I only know because of the Silencer1 I had on my old vid card) is that the bottom of the vid card retaining bracket is vibrating up against your case. Take the card out, and wrap a single layer of electrical tape around the bottom tab of the bracket. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Thanks fussnfeathers but the noise is from the card itself and does stop when fan speed is set to 100% - any other %age and you get the noise. I believe there is an electronic component, something like a rheostat, that is making the noise.
I hear it because the Aria Antec case is on the desk beside me plus the fact that everything else is very quiet! |

This could be the fan throttling and the fan blades slapping the air at a lower speed.
You are saying that all replacements did this?
Although mine wasn't silent, it wasn't loud. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Mine made a bit of noise as well, due to the design, but it wasn't excessive. I do remember reading somewhere when I was installing my cooler that it made a "whacking" sort of noise. My rig is so loud, I never really noticed, though.
Check and make sure the fan is going the right direction, it's possible (unlikely, but possible) that yours is plugged in backwards. It needs to be spinning clockwise (as you look at the fan), so the convex side of the blade is pushing the air, not the other way around. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

two things....what Fnf said might be true...and the card is ust vibrating differently due to the lower RPMs, and therefor the lower resonant frequency response....
....or...maybe a wire is tapping the blades ever so slightly?
if they have all done this though....at this point id say deal with it....=[ _________________

| If you stop the fan physically the clicking noise continues, there is something on the Arctic website about an ATI chip LM63 being an issue, and I do believe that the noise is an elecronic component making a noise rather than anything mechanical associated with fan movement. Thanks to all for input on this |
