Finding rumours about Apple switching to Intel based hardware is not difficult to find. Such talk has been around for a long time. The chances of this happening are slim, but OS X could be easily ported to X86 (if it isn't already) since the x86 Darwin version already exists. What I would like to see is Microsoft turn the tables and port one of its OSes to a different processor altogther.
I like what I see in the new PPC970, more than I like in the Opteron or upcoming Athlon64, and definately more than the upcoming Prescott (still no 64-bit). That Apple is using it makes me jealous.
Would Microsoft have to abandon almost everything it currently has? I don't think so. It might be easy to forget that IBM has made some damm--my misspelling is intentional--good desktop processors and systems of its own.
I don't know enough about OS code to know if porting XP is possible, but the fact that Microsoft has written software to run on Macs tells me it knows something about it.
