The demo for what looks like the best use of the Doom 3 engine so far came out earlier today. Hit up any major download site to get it, even though I couldn't really find anywhere with decent speeds. _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

Yeah COD:2 uses the Doom3 engine, and the original COD used the Quake 3 engine. It actually ran very well on my 9600. I think they really turned down the Doom 3 engine so they could do more with it. _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

Actually, the Doom3 engine was designed to run on a very wide variety of systems. It even runs smoothly on DX8 systems. Not spectacular, mind you, but it supports them.
I'll get the CoD2 demo, just to check a few things out. They might not have used as much dynamic lighting as Doom 3 does. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Yeah they don't. You don't really notice a whole lot of lighting, unlike Doom 3. It's one of the reasons it runs better.
Even with the lighting issue aside, it still doesn't look as "Flashy" as Doom 3 did. But I couldn't turn graphics all the way up. Either the demo is limited (Likely), or it thinks my machine is _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

lol. dod source is an awesome game. right now i play cod(1st one), i play mostly on sniper servers, more dramatic experience i'll check out cod2, i really dont like the doom 3 engine though, hogs alot of memory and cpu power.Seems like a bulky engine... cant wait for U. E 3 |

It's typical of the current high-end game engines. Most have dumped support for soundcards (so, yeah, your X-Fi won't be doing much, despite the cost) in favor of CPU rendered sound, which allows them to do alot more. Likewise, the lighting effects in those engines are very CPU heavy, so they tax the CPU and RAM alot more........which is why they can run on many different generations of machines, regardless of DX code, soundcard, and vid card.
Yes, they use DX9, and look better.........and yes, they use positional sound, a ton of algorithms to change sound compared to location.........but all of that is CPU based, NOT soundcard based.
Basically, the D3 and HL2 engines are treating your system like it has onboard sound and half-onboard video, no matter what you actually physically have in your system.
Keep that in mind, when you're looking at a new X-Fi..............even with the 64mb RAM, it's still only going to perform according to the software, which is bypassing pretty much everything on the card and doing it on the CPU. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
