|
|
I put together a system for a friend of mine. Here are the specs:
2400+ Mobile
Abit NF7-S v.2 w/ latest BIOS revision
512 PC 4000 RAM
I have the bus set to 200 and the muliplier set to 11. Sometimes the multiplier gets set to 6.0 I go into the BIOS and it says that it's set to 11 however it's not really because I can see at the top what it's really set to. The only way to get it back to 11 is to change it to something DIFFERENT than 11, reboot, and switch it back to 11. This seems to happen at random. It also happened today. I unplugged and turned off the machine, came back at the end of the day, turned it back on and it had set itself to 6.0. The 200 bus speed stayed the same. All of the other settings don't get lost, just the multiplier. Any help is greatly appreciated as this isn't my machine and I can't just keep resetting it for myself.

Well, one thing I can see wrong right off the bat. Your FSB setting is WAY too high. That proc is a 266mhz FSB chip, so you need to set it in your BIOS at 133mhz (double-pumped....266mhz). Your multiplier should be 13.5.
What's happening is you're OC'ing the chip, and trying to run it at 2.2ghz........it's a 1.8ghz chip. The BIOS resetting is telling you it's overheated, and reset to what it "thinks" is right.
Set it at 133mhz, 13.5 multiplier, and you're all set. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

I'll give that a try, thanks! So if I set it to 133 and then the multi to 13.5 that will give me stock speeds? And from there I change the FSB to overclock? _________________ Pentium D 805 2.6 @ 3.8GHz

One more question. Does that mean that my system is also messed up? I haven't had these kinds of problems and it's been solid for a long time. You can see the specs below. I'm running it at 200 x 11. Should I change this as well? _________________ Pentium D 805 2.6 @ 3.8GHz

your cpu might be handling the OC better than what his processor is. So yours can run at that all the time. While his is puking on those settings.
But on this I think that the bios is the one that is puking not the cpu. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

| ^^^ what he said. I had the same problem with my multi. A bios update fixed mine. I had to go from bios 19 down to 17 and then after I got the newest update. What i'm trying to say is check for newest update first or go back one. It may help . Also when I experienced bios issues , i never used to clear my cmos. ALWAYS clear your bios. |

This seems to have resolved the problem. Before the BIOS did not recognize the CPU type, now it know it's a AMD Athlon. So my friend doesn't feel like cleaning out his HSF (TT Silent Boost) so he wants to keep the system as cool as possible. My plan is to keep the CPU at 1.8GHz so I can lower the voltage and change the FSB/DRAM ratio to 4/6 to get 400MHz for the RAM. I suppose I could even go higher as this is 500MHz RAM. My question is, does this really do anything for performance? Is the whole system just going to end up waiting for the FSB anyway?
Thanks again for the help _________________ Pentium D 805 2.6 @ 3.8GHz

Just to clarify, changing the settings to 133 x 13.5 seems to have fixed the problem. I don't completely know because the 6.0 multiplier reset was somewhat random. _________________ Pentium D 805 2.6 @ 3.8GHz

The difference there is your 2500+ XP is a 333mhz FSB, which should be running at 166mhz, multi of 11 (1.8ghz). Running your XP at 200mhz FSB isn't nearly as big a jump.........only a 68mhz FSB increase, compared to a 134mhz increase. Yours will be stable, while his will not........especially if the AGP/PCI speeds aren't locked. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

^^^Definitely. That's a pretty drastic OC to jump to. Always do so incramentally. _________________ |¤| |

Answering the last question:
It might help, it might not. Remember, that changing the ratio of FSB also changes the AGP/PCI bus if it's not locked.........it's not limited to just the RAM. Basically, that's what you were doing in the first place.
If your friend wants it to run cool, stable, and hassle-free, stick with the stock settings. OC'ing is for people who want to screw around alot. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. This has been a nagging issue with this system and I'm excited to have it fixed. This forum is always great.
