Ok guys, heres the down low. I have a neighbor with an ASUS A7N8X mobo. The thing has like dual lan outputs... nvidia one and a 3com. He couldnt get highspeed internet to work with either port. Asked me if i could give it a whirl. Im stumped. Ive tried to find the latest drivers for the thing but they suck... and im wondering if there is something that i overlooked. He has never hooked the computer up to broardband. When plugged into the router the thing could see the other computer, just not access it. Im kinda really confused right now.

hey guys, back for labor day, then off to toil in the dungeon which is my high school. Check to see if the other has a firewall running, windows firewall might have to be disabled and norton definiately does. check to make sure you ran the home network configuration thingy under network connections. Thats what fixed it for me.

What ISP is it? It should fire right up without a problem, if the network settings are correct.

Try plugging it directly into the modem, see if it works. If not, then it's a network settings issue on that machine. If it does, then it's an issue with firewall settings on the router.

yes it is and yes i did with no luck, the network setup wouldnt help me though anyways, thats just for setting up a network, i cant even get the damn thing to work with just internet explorer...

.....if youre using a router...its still a network even with one machine.....you would still need to tell it that you are "Always connected through LAN"

Right. Typically an ISP will give you an "install CD".........which I typically don't use, what with spyware and crap that they toss on there.

Run the Network Settings Wizard, make sure it's connected to the 'net, and make sure the workgroup names are the same on both machines. Also, make sure that you select "this computer connects directly to the internet".......not "connects to the internet through another computer" or "other computers connect to the internet via this computer".

Then verify your router settings, to make sure it's actually passing the signal through.

Wouldn't hurt to check the cable as well........did you try plugging that machine directly into the modem?

Which Router is it? RTFM frenchy....

go to command prompt.....type "ipconfig /all" and see if the darn thing is passing dns addies....it must be getting an IP from somewhere if it can ping the other puter. Get into that router and look at the settings.

You also want to make sure your using the right cable. You need some cat5e to connect properly to send data or to even see each other on the network. Some cables look the same, but a way to test it out is if there is another computer in the house using it, try using that cable to connect it to the router.

meh..dont think thats it....if he can ping another machine...then the hardware is working well enough.....

Do what 2old said.

Flush and renew dns......make sure netbios is enabled.....and DHCP on the router...

If its connecting, whats the IP address its showing...if it starts with 169.254.x.x then its not actually connecting, if its getting a valid ip address, try updating firmware. And as i said, the type of cable is very important. There is a type for connecting a computer to a computer, and there is a type for connecting a computer to a router. But anyways, if your getting 169.254 Ip try this.

1.Start regedit by going to Start->Run->"regedit" or, in XP, "regedt32"
2.Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters and click on Parameters in the left panel.
3.In the right panel right-click below the last item and add a new DWORD value and name it "IPAutoconfigurationEnabled", so the line reads
IPAutoconfigurationEnabled REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Close the registry editor and reboot the unit.

Once that is done you can follow the steps on the MS site to reset the TCP/IP stack.


Also take a look at your router settings, try setting a manual IP and if thats not the case than in the router setup, set your router to PPOE and that should give you the internet connection. Also make sure your using your computer to connect THROUGH a gateway.

aight guys,
Recap.
Reinstalled drivers for the lan, nothing.

Doesnt connect with a direct line from the modem. Its not the router. His second computer works fine ont he router. Im using the right kind of cables... thats a no brainer.

I took a usb wireless adapter that i have for my pops laptop. Plugged it in, installed it. It finds the wireless settings on the router and connects no problem. On the connection status page, it shows the packets in and out, well with both the wired and wireless settings it shows that its sending lots of packets, and receiving 0. I cant even access 192.168.0.1 to see router settings. This leads me to believe that a software firewall is screwing things up. I search the computer, disable windows firewall, disable mcaffee firewall... cant find any others and still nothing. Im thinking a clean install of windows is the next step, incase something was changed... what u guys got for me.

Might as well wipe. Sounds to me like something is preventing incoming traffic completely.

Just out of curiosity, you have checked in the BIOS to make sure the ports are enabled there, right?
