Weeeell..........some specs about your computer would be helpful.

Processor brand and speed, motherboard maker (if you know it), or even just the model number of the off-the-shelf box you bought. And the OS you're running would be helpful too.

Indeed....where is it "not seen." In Windows or in the BIOS? (start-up)

If BIOS sees it....try and boot up on a "bootable" cd.

If it boots...then your OS load is prolly borked.
If it is not seen in BIOS and won't boot, then the drive is prolly borked.

also if you built it yourself, make shure all of your connections are correct, unplug and replug them all. Then make shure that all of the jumper settings on the back of the drive are correct. Did it work and then stop working?

sry, bout that... um... so if u didnt mess with the jumpers, i would try to update the firmware for the drive, and depending on how long ago you got the system, attempt to RMA it.

Right now, it sounds like a bad CD-Rom. He says he was using it, listening to music, and it just stopped.

Hard to say.........if it's just a CD-Rom, it's probably an older, used system. That's typical of how a CD drive fails........suddenly, while in use, with no warning.

Just have to wait for a response.

it may just be a temperamental drive that is on its way out. So keep on eye on it and if it fails you may want to have an extra handy to put in its place. Or it might be a good idea to replace it and not have to worry about it. A plain cd-rom drive wont be expensive at all.
