I was attempting to see what I could tweak on my system- which isn't much because I have an Intel motherboard. All I can really change is the timings on my ram. And, to my surprise, I was able to. I have 512mb dual channel DDR2 Corsair ValueSelect. It's DDR533 with 4-4-4-12 timings. My cheap ram ran the low latency 3-3-3-8 timings without a problem. Surprised the hell out of me. It has been running fine. It helped bump up some of my SiSoft benchmarks, as well as decrease my SuperPi times.

I'm just curious if there is anything I should do to test the system to ensure its intergrity? Is running memtest or anything of that sort necessary? I was under the impression that it is not necessary.

its always a good idea to run memtest when changing memory settings to make shure that the memory is stable.

in fact it is vital to make sure your memory isnt causing any faults. Errors in the memory can cause all kinds of symptoms. Like random problems with IE for example.

Also with memtest+ it will show you the bandwdth of each of the memories; L1, L2 (L3), and system memory. This way it can help you find the optimal timings and FSB. Very useful tool.
