processor reading wrong speed??

My processor is only reading 1.15Ghz when it should be reading 1.5Ghz

My system specs are:
Gigabyte GA-7DXE Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
1.5Ghz (only reads 1.15Ghz though . Does this mean it is running at this speed?) - has something to do with front side bus!
768 RAM
60GB
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4800 SE (128MEG)

I am unsure of what to have my FSB set at. it's on 133 at the moment. when i flick the little switch on the motherboard, i get the correct reading, but the computer keeps rebooting on it's own and i get a heap of errors.
I am just wanting to know what to have everything set at and if my processor is actually running at that low speed or is it just an incorrect reading?
I have recently re-formatted so don't tell me to do that :)

well if fsb is at 133 then it should be fine .. unless ur multi is wrong...

Your switch most likely upped the FSB, that would be why it crashes. You need to read the board manual and check how to set the multi. I agree with G$, its most likely the issue.

I pulled up the manual for your board, just out of curiosity. The switch for your FSB should be set to "on", for 133mhz. I believe the multiplier for your proc should be 11.5 (11.5 x 133 = 1526)

If you have the FSB switch in the "off" position, you'd be running 11.5 x 100, which makes sense. First question, though........was the proc running at 1.5ghz before? Worst case scenario........you got a "remarked" chip, that had been altered to run at a higher speed, and the modding wore off finally. Not likely, but it does happen.

Your problem could be a number of things, but the most common:

Windows is choking on the sudden 400mhz OC. I know you just reformatted, but do it again, this time with the switch in the 133mhz position.

If you're still getting errors, reset your BIOS. That board doesn't have a reset jumper, so just pull the battery out, hit the power button to discharge any power from the board/PSU, then put the battery back in after 5 minutes or so.

It could be a bad stick of RAM. Upping your FSB (on your mobo, anyway) shouldn't change the RAM speed at all, but there's no way to check. What you can do is pull all but one stick of RAM, boot at the proper FSB, and see if the errors occur. If they don't, pull that stick, put the next one in. Wash, rinse, repeat. You can also run MemTest86 overnight, it'll show you any RAM errors.

Your heatsink could be allowing the proc to overheat. With the system set as it is now, boot into your BIOS, and go to PC Health Status, and let us know what your temps are. If they're high at 1.15ghz, then they're DEFINITELY too high at 1.5ghz.

Finally, it could be a failing motherboard. Unfortunately, the only way to check that is to replace it.

While you're at it, download CPUz ( http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php ) and look at what RAM you have. Post that here as well.

Yes id recheck all of your multiplier/fsb settings, I know when i was setting up my friends amd setup with his gigabyte motherboard, it is very tricky some times to get the settings right.

his was doing the same thing, detecting it as a 2100+ when it was a 2800+

My computer used to read 1.5 Ghz. not sure when it actually went down in speed though.
At the moment, my computer is running fine (at 1.15ghz) with the switch set to off and the voltage thingy set to disabled in the bios. (133 is marked underneath - which is the correct speed) I cannot enable it or enable the manual switch as my pc restarts without notice.

My temps are fine, i have a thermaltake CPU cooler and get steady temps of 34 degrees celcius. So it wouldnt be restarting because of heat issues.

I will definately try what u said about formatting with the switch in the on position and taking the battery out. I will also try taking out the 256 RAM stick as i have had previous problems with it. (very old) And i will get my brother to help me out as he is alot more cluey than me when it comes to computers.

hmm..i've got the switch on now and it's running at 1.5GHZ but i had to take the 256 ram out because it was restarting. so now just the 512 is in.
The ram sticks were different speeds also, could that have caused restarts?
256RAM DDR PC2100MHz and 512 DDR PC2700Mhz
I am goin to sell the 256 and have both 512 PC 2700. And see if they both work fine together.
