Hi, i got a good deal on a swiftech kit meant for 478 type of boards, i however have a 775, my question is: Can i use the current bracket and goof around with it...maybe somehow attach the block.....or get the bracket meant for the 775 ??
much appreciated! |

not only won't the bracket work properly but when you are using a LGA-775 chip and motherboard you are supposed to use a "stepped" waterblock. Not the flat waterblock used for the A64s and Socket 478 P4s. I only know this because of my most recent build, as I ran into the same problem. I know in my case I probably could have ran a flat bottom block (wow say that three times fast!) because the block didnt contact anything but the heatspreader on the cpu but I didnt want to chance it with such an expensive cpu.
The only possible way to get this to work would be making sure that the flat bottom block only contacts the cpu heatspreader and using something like this. Then you would have to use some cheap thermal paste and spread it in a thin layer over the entire waterblock mating surface. Then you would mount it up like you normally would and allow it to sit for a few minutes and then take it back apart. Now you have to check to see if it contacted anything but the cpu. If it contacted anywhere else then you will need the stepped version of the block. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

In a shorter version of what Weaz said.
LGA775 procs sit lower, low enough that the retaining lever actually is a touch higher than the proc itself. You need the stepped block to clear the lever, otherwise the block will be sitting cockeyed, and not contact the proc at all.
LGA775 HSF's also don't use as much force, since the pins are easily bendable (no support). Stick an HSF designed for a 478 on there and crank it down, you'll mash some things up inside. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
