Programs start automatically and crash computer! help!

hey guys, my girlfriend is having a little issue with her computer. Every once in a while, when it boots up, internet explorer starts up automatically and uses 100% of the CPU for some reason. It's not set to start automatically, so i'm lost as to whgy it does! teh only way to get the comp back to normal is wait an un-godly long time and kill the process through task manager. Any clues?

run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and your favorite anti-virus app
for best rresults, run them in safe mode

Agreed on the spyware.

Also check to see if somehow she managed to drag IE into her Startup folder in her Start Menu. You wouldn't belive what I've seen people put in there.........then call me when starting up their computer fired up every game they'd installed off of the 'net the day before.

Also try a registry scanner.
