|
|
Hi all,
I'm currently fresh installing XP on my system and I'm considering making two separate XP installations on two separate partitions. I've been doing some reading on the topic and am weighing up the benefits, but I was hoping to get some thoughts and advice from some real people out there.
Now firstly, let me tell you why I'm even thinking about this! I work as a freelance video editor, so my rig is primarily set up for workstation apps. Games and play come second (but I can't live without my bf1942.) Problem is I'm constantly comming up against little glitchs, conflicts, codec issues, blahblahblah as a result of running so many different programs on the one system.
So, basically my thoughts are thus: Making a dual boot system (both XP) on the one HDD. One partition would be used for the Internet, games, music, video, etc. In other words, all the day to day junk we like to do.
The other partition would be used primarily for video editing, so it would have Premiere Pro, some encoding software, music creation software, etc. This partition would not be connected to the net. The idea is that I can keep all my work apps separate and not need the internet, firewalls, adaware or a bunch of other stuff running in the background. It would also minimise conflicts between games, weird codecs and all that stuff that can (and has) cause(d) havoc with a video editing system.
Naturally I have separate HDD's dedicated to footage and backups.
So what are people’s thoughts? Pro's Vs con's and experiences. I'd also like to hear from people who have actually done this. The main drawback I can see for me personally is having to restart my computer every time I want to check email or surf the net while editing. But this may be the price I pay for peace of mind.
I look forward to any replies.
Cheers.

It's do-able....I used to have to do it in 2000. Partition magic and boot magic were required, and a few rules observed. It pretty much suxors just to do it for one game. Find some old p2 just for the game. I got an old 166 I cobbled together, just to play Dune2 on. _________________ .

True...but you'll need partition magic or volume manager to create a proper set of partitions for boot magic to dual boot from. At least in my experience. _________________ .
