I went to the display properties to change my desktop image and the DESKTOP tap is no longer there. I have tried clicking on images and clicking the "set to desktop image" but it will not change. Anyone have any ideas?

thats what i mean...it sounds like the install of windows got borked somehow....

Id say run all your normal scans to see what happens.....and check your services....make sure the main ones are running properly.....

Boot from your windows disk and perform a repair is probably your best bet.

I take it youve done the norm, virus and adaware scan?

The desktop tab can be disabled via group policy in Windows XP. A desktop image can also be locked so a user can not change it.

Is someone playing a trick on you?

Am I assuming correctly that you are using Windows XP?

I agree........see if your security settings got screwed. Boot into your Admin account (you DO have a seperate Admin account, right?) and see if it's available there. It's a feature that allows an IT to set a specific desktop image (or lack of) to help prevent viruses/trojans. Also keeps people who work for MS from putting nudie pics as their desktop image.

It might also be a botched graphics driver, so try uninstalling your vid card driver, restarting, clicking out of the "new hardware detected" screens, just use the basic Windows driver, and see if it's there again.

How to check your group policy settings:

Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc

MIssing Desktop tab
Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer

The Setting "Turn on Classic Shell" should have a state of "Not configured"

Can't change desktop picture
Local Computer Policy -> User Configuration -> Administratrive Templates -> Windows Components -> Desktop -> Active Desktop

The Setting "Active Desktop Wallpaper" should have a state of "Not configured"

*Actually all the Settings in Active Desktop should be set to "Not configured"
