| hey guys i have been looking around for a laptop for college, wanna make a good one, but i have noticed that all AMD laptops seem to only come with a ATI 9700 pro video card at the most, none of the PCI generation items. i was wondering if it was because the chipset in the system doesnt support a PCI? if so then why doesnt AMD have a laptop system that will support PCI? just havent gotten around to it? thanks guys |

well, laptops being as flat as they are... theres just no way a PCI card (i guess u meant PCIexpress) would fit ...lol, laptops tend to be a lil flat.. so usually everything comes integrated into one board, except ram, and hard drisk etc...but usually video, sound, lan cpu, everyhting is mostly integrated... _________________ My setupd:

^^^^^^ what?
Laptops have most all of the stuff you mentioned, it's just much different than the desktop versions. My laptop, for instance, has an add-in X800 that I could upgrade later if I want, as well as a 3.2 P4 that I could also upgrade. As for sound and LAN, both are integrated on mine, but I am getting an add-in wireless 'net card. Also, I had the option of getting an add-in sound card, but I don't have the spare money for that, and intel's integrated audio is pretty good from what I hear. _________________

| Spiegel is right, PCMCIA are the expansion slots of laptops. Just like PCI is for desktops. You can get a laptop that does have a seperate videocard, and there are a few (not alot) that can be upgraded as well. |

Yea, I think you're prolly most correct in your first statement, "they just haven't got around it." Only a couple newer "AMD" chipsets support pcix, and they haven't trickled into laptops yet.
If your seriously looking at a laptop for school/business purposes, and want a good one, I would suggest the centrino technologies, and if you get your choice, a processor with dothan core.
If you're considering trying to game with it while at school, then the video support may be the bigger concern. 2¢ _________________ .
