Is it possible to order Windows to stop creating a "My Pictures" folder within My Documents? When I recently got my second(old) HDD up and running for data storage, I moved all my pictures to it, so I no longer have any use for the "My Pictures" folder on my C: drive. It's not causing me any problems...I was just wondering if there was some way to permenantly delete it (for the sake of neatness) without it coming back?

I am using XP home w/ SP2...

But it does come back. And I don't even have to restart...if I close the folder for a few minutes or so, the "My Pictures" folder comes back. Every time. I deleted it twice today, trying to find a way to make it stay gone, but back it came. Confused

There's a registry hack for that, I'll have to find it again. The problem is Windows (by default, whether you like it or not) insists that the My Documents folder and subfolders exist, and most Windows media programs are coded to use those folders as default.......so even if you delete the folder, but then open Photoshop or some such, Windows puts it right back. Annoying, but that's about it.

I'll see if I can find the hack again, there was a way to keep that from happening.

Yeah, I see what you mean. In fact, I was using them to store all my pics and the "My Music" folder to store the music I have saved with RealOne player. It was easier than making my own custom folders. But now that I have this second HDD for all that, I don't neet them! Ah well, thanks fnf...if you find it let me know, but until then, I just have it hidden, like Josh said.

Its like what windows movie maker does, it makes a 'my videos' folder in the my doc folder ( i hate that too). It makes the folder because somewhere in the options its assigned to save your work to that folder. So if you can find out what program in xp is making that folder, you can change the options, and the folder should never come back Very Happy

In Win2000 / XP, right-click the "My Pictures" folder and drag it to its destination. Choose Move Here.

Check the following keys in the registry and you should see that the shell folder has moved correctly. Do not edit the registry as this will not effect a change.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

I have no idea WHY this works but it worked for me. If it doesn't work, there is probably an additional setting specific to an application you've installed. Scanning the registry for "My Pictures" may help identify the culprit.

Late reply......the hack I was thinking of was to change where your Windows Exploder folder opened.

I'm sure there was something.....I know TweakXP has functions to change this stuff, but I assume you're looking for something free. I went through my system the other day, and almost all of my programs have an option to "save to XXXXXX folder", bypassing Windows' idiot proof design.
