Hey guys, i jsut picked up a venice core 3200 to replce my winchester - i update the bios, it detects the new CPU and everything initializes fine, it displays the little windows boot up screen but after that all i get is a black screen. When i ut my old winchester back in everything works fine again. Anu idea what this could be? _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

can you get it to boot from the XP disc?
you know how sensitive XP is to hardware changes, you may need to at least do a OS "repair" _________________ Yeah....... ok |

hmmmm... i'll give it a try.
I tried booting it into safe mode but it won't do it.... kinda strange considering it's jsut a CPU change... never really had this kind of problem before. Hopefully we can get it fixed without having to reinstall XP _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

I tried reparing it through the CD... it takes an amazingly long time to do anything through it though... it took like 10 minutes to "start into windows" and it's been examining my drive configurations for the past 20 minutes... i'm kinda lost. Maye i'll go poke around the bios and see if i didn't mess something up... everything in bios is set up for the 3200.... the multiplier is 10 and not 9 like the winchester was and on POST it says "athlon 64 3200".... I have a new power supply coming in tomorrow, maybe it'll magically cure itself overnight _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

it is a new memory controller too, so that may cause windows to go nuts...(like it needs a reason)could also be that the motheboard doesn't support it, and that there will be a new bios update soon _________________ If time is of the essence,

I think Moebius is right. Since the AMD's have the memory controller built in, Windows is probably choking on it. You may have to do a complete, low-level reformat and reinstall, to get it working right. Put the old proc back in, back up all your important stuff, and try that. If it STILL acts like it's trying to poop a watermelon, it could be a BIOS update that only supports the new chip to an extent, but not completely. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

OK here's where i am after a day of tinkering with it on and off:
1) put the old proc back in and booted it up fine this morning. i had to bring my comp to class with me for a presentation and it wouldn't boot when i got there... said "the following file is missing or corrupt.... blah blah." I had this happen on my old DFI motherboard when i'd OC the RAM too high so i played around with that, put everything back to stock settings and tried to run it again. No luck.
2) Tried running the recovery console through the XP disk with the old proc in there - it would freeze every time.
3) gave up and tried to reinstall windows with old proc still in there and once again it kept freezing up. I cleared CMOS a bunch of times and it never seemed to do any good. I borrowed my friend's XP disk thinking mine might just be scratched or soemthing - same results.
4) new power supply came in today to fix my old graphics stuttering problem - Antec truepower 2 550watt - installed it and put venice back in - made sure i ahd flashed bios to the new, venice compatible version - it still gave me the corrupt file error.
5) tried reinstalling XP with the venice and new PSU - kept freezing again.
6) went into BIOS and told it to run memtest86 during startup - never got past POST.... cleared CMOS and now im actually in worse shape then i was when i started, considering windows is now screwy....
what am i overlooking?? is it jsut my motherboard being ugly? _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

I don't have any other memory i could try in there, but i don't think it's the memory that's the problem. It always POSTs fine and i'e nver had an issue with it....
At this point i think it has to be the motherboard or BIOS or something.... just cause it keeps freezing when trying to do anything through the windows CD and it would do that no matter what proc i have in there...
when going through the windows CD it never gets past the "checking disk configuration" screen - I noticed that the floppy drive light would always be ON when it's doing that so i unplugged the floppy and all hard drives except the one i want to install windows on to.... same thing happens. _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

well bad memory can do what you are describing. Try one stick at a time and see what that does for you. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I tried reinstalling windows but it alwasy freezes up before i can get anywhere - usually while it's "checkin hardware config".
Anyway i tried the memory swapping thing - ran one stick at a time and it did the same thing with both. Maybe it's jsut the motherboard? I'll keep trying but if nothing else works i'll jsut RMA it.
oh, and it froze during POST a few times too... with both processors... forgot to mention that _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

it really sounds to me like you've made a mess of the bios... since its nothing else, and switching things around doesnt do much.. sounds like during your bios flash somethign bad happened, maybe u only got half of the flash and stilll have half the older one, i dono, but it sounds like bad bios to me. _________________ My setupd:

Yeah, that's probably what happened. I RMA'd it back to newegg on Tuesday but then i came across an article somewhere saying the DFI NF4 ultra-D motherboard can't run the venice at 1T timings.... that might have been it too. LOL _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

Okai - so here's a little update.
I got EVERYTHNG new in my system. EVERYTHING.
1) upgraded from the DFI NF4 ultra-D to the SLI-DR
2) new video cards (2x MSI 6600gt for SLI)
3) new processor (Athlon 64 3200 winchester - known good)
I tried to install windows on it again, still freezing in different spots. tried 2 different XP disks - no difference. The only thing left from my old setup is the memory and the sound card. So i guess memory is next on the butcher block??
i can't think of what else it could be.... kinda sad though considering that's about $300 worth of RAM _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

if you are trying to run 4 sticks of 512 just try one gig at a time. AND before you try and install windows run memtest86! _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I have 2 512 sticks right now. And i can't get it to boot up to memtest86. I just put in an order for 2gb of PQI turbo.... (2 x 1gb) so i'll see if it boots up OK with that.... i'm kinda lost as to what else could be causing to to freeze.... _________________ DFI Nforce 4 SLI-DR

I have heard that the DFI NF4 is VERY pick about hardware, especialy memory.
is there any chance you could try a different brand in there? _________________ Yeah....... ok |
