no, No, NO, NO!!! It's a terrible deal. Not only will you be buying a Mac(guh!) but it's a slow Mac to boot.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto/computer_customize_addons_continue.do

That's just an example of what you could get for a similar amount of money. The processor is much faster, you have double the RAM, and a pretty darned good vid card. That system would preform really well with just about anything you could throw at it, if you ask me. In fact, it's basically what I'll be configuring for my mom in a month or so so she can have a comp when I move out and take my 3 with me.

P.S. - dunno if it works for you guys, but the link says it's temporarily down for me so that's a:

HP Pavillion ZD8000
Win XP Pro
P4 3.0 w/ HT
17" widescreen
1GB DDR2 533
60GB 7200RPM HDD
128MB X600

Total - $1768.00

that's actually a pretty good deal...
it's not too far from the newer models specs, and the new ones sell for between 2600 to 3600 canadian.
Anyone who knows anything about computers will tell you that clock speed doesn't matter... it's how much work that can be done with that speed...\
saying it's 3.0Ghz is like saying that your car is running at 8000 RPM... well that's great, how fast are you going?

Now if your buying a mac for gaming... Abandon all hope, i used to have a 486 that outperformed g3's when it came to gaming. If your using it for web use and office, it's overkill, if your using it for sound or video editing, it's the perfect choice....

only things you have to watch out for are battery life... if it is at all like the newer models, it should have a battery life of around 4-5 hours. Also check the hinge for the monitor, and make sure the cd-rom slot still works well... and oh yeah, the important one... does it post.
if every thing checks out, go for it

Also check on Apple's site about recalls. They had a pretty massive recall of PowerBooks for bad displays awhile back. If you can, get the serial number, and check to make sure it's not affected.

...and you may what to check those specs again... Apple does not put a G5 in their laptops yet. Only the G4.

I thought about that after I posted, and left the house.......yeah, it's a G4. Definitely check on the recall, there's a specific list of SN's that it applies to. If the seller won't give you the specific parts of the SN (it's only the first 6-10 digits, if I remember right), then I wouldn't buy it. Apple will repair it for free, but you'd be down 2-4 weeks without your expensive purchase.

Personally, I tried one of the PowerBooks, and I didn't care for it much.......not because it's Apple, it just didn't perform as well as an AMD/Intel machine. The display was darn nice, though.......but all the PowerBooks we had at the shop were subject to the recall, we wound up dropping Apple, two months after we got the dealership. Too many hassles.

Becareful in picking your fights. I'd like to see a $600 Laptop do what that powerbook can.

my rebuttal, newegg search price range 600-1000 for pc laptop, this is the most powerful...

I'll take this over the 1000 g4 1.33 crap anyday.

i run Mac as well as PC>....and to be honest guys... it all depends on the application...for gamers and web browsers...its over priced....but for media.....nothing beats em.....

its all a matter of the taget audience...i love them both for what they are.... VERY different....cant compare apples and oranges....why try with Mac vs PC

not to draw attention away from the fanboy action that seems to be stirring up.

1 word 'ebay', http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=177&item=5195432933&rd=1

As you can see that powerbook is significantly less then 1,600$ I would browse some ebay auctions before buying it from your friend.

If I'm not mistaken, He's talking about Canadian dollars,
1,600 Can. is about $1,300 US dollars, so that eBay auction is still a better deal
