|
|
Well, since my two questions should go into the OS and general hardware sections, I just thought I'd post them here...'cause they're for the same person.
OK, I went over to clean up my uncle's computer today and fix his daughter's, but I ran into a pair of problems.
First, he needs a new printer/scanner/copier/fax device. His old one died, and he wants a new one with all 4 functions...any suggestions from you office supply guys?
Second, the problem on his daughter's computer is when you press ctrl+alt+del=no task manager. Nothing pops up. The task manager starts to open, I see the icon in the system tray, but the manager window never pops up. She's running XP home; I fiddled with every setting I could think of to try and get the task manager to show. After I left I realized that I scanned and cleaned all the spyware up, I cleaned her startup, and I got rid of all her old junk, but I forgot to virus scan. Could it maybe be a virus that's cauing it to not show?
Any ideas will be appreciated, so...thanks! Now, then...off to calculus homework! yay! _________________

Second question first.......the icon opens on the taskbar, and stays open, right?
Click it to bring the program manager up, then click Options, and make sure Minimize on Use and Hide When Minimized are un-checked.
If the icon doesn't even stay open, yeah, you've got a virus. Do the Safe Mode thing, it should stay open then. Look for anything wierd, like Explore.exe (not ExploreR.....just Explore), and disable them. Gotta do this in Safe Mode, though. Kinda sounds like MyDoom or a variant, those won't allow Task Manager, regedit, or anything else to open that could allow you to get rid of them.
Printer-wise, I've always like HP's all-in-one machines better than the others. Higher print quality, usually better speed, the scanners are top notch, and they tend to support ink cartridges longer than the other brands. What's his price range? And does it need to be legal-sized scanning, or just regular letter size? That'll make a difference......all-in-ones with legal sized flatbed scanners are freakin' expensive. For just letter-size, look at the 55xx and 65xx series. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

If your looking for a great unit that does not kill you on the ink cost, you would want to look at a cannon MP-780, they run around the 250-300 range. Great speed, 2 paper trays, built in 2 sided printing. I've sold a lot of these units, not a single complaint. (Sallys dad's has one as well) Definintly look into it. |

I second what Hoeman said. Canon makes very nice units. And the MP-780 is a great choice. As it come highly recommended by a Canon service tech I know. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!
