Heh, i was just hoping that since you guys seem to do a decent amount of souns sytem tweaking, i was wondering if anyone had any "leftovers" from old tweaks...I have to be on the road at about 5:30 every morning for college next semester, and i would like to NOT have to roll the window down and stick my head out to stay awake....

I'm willing to pay up to about $50 for a nice set of door installs, and at least a 10 sub for the back...i have a '93 toyota corrola (maybe corolla), if that helps w/ compatibility...i also have a brand new clarion deck, forget the name but it was their best one for 2004...cost me a nice $300...but anyway, i htink it came w/ the sub hookups, so all i really need are some damn speakers...if anyone can hook me up, or knows anyone who can, please, e-mail, or PM me...THANKS!!!

P.S. I KNOW I can get a decent system for around $75, but im just looking for some cheap replacements for these factory piece of craps...they were already blown when i got the car...

The only thign I have is a set of Rockford 10's in their box. No amp though. And I cannot say I would part with them for less than $100

Yeah........don't forget that you still need an amp for the subs. All the hookups on the back of a head unit do is provide line-level signal to an external amp.....they won't drive speakers on their own.

I have a set of speakers, myself, but they're all Infinity, I'd have to ask too much for them. Eventually, they'll probably go in my Cavalier, but it seems silly to hook those up to a stock Delco cassette system.....

I've got an extra MTX thunder 6000 (10") and a MTX 4202 amp (i think the birth certificate says 280watts at 4 ohms bridged at 13.5v - gotta double check it though)

How much are you asking for them both?

Oh, and do you know if it will hook up to my deck...

Brand new i think i got them for $95 - woofer and $160 for the amp. Depending on shipping, i'd say about $160 shipped to your door. Yes, they will hook up to your reciever. You'll just need some RCA's and power cables.

Pics are yours if you want them.

That's a nice headunit you've got there. Would be no problem hooking up JW's stuff to it.

Well I just ran into a new speaker that a buddy was getting rid of.... now im riped between 3 12" audiobahn Alum12Q's and (2) 15" Kicker Solo Baric L7's....what to do...Like my Audiobahns but the kickers are so much stronger. Also when i choose the speakers I would like to keep, I will need to sale the others. So if any1 is in need of some GREAT SUBS let me know. All are basicly brand new do to the fact that my alums have been sitting in my car while i was out of town. And the kicker is a sub that my friend got off ebay but didnt really want...

personally.... i love the rumble of 15's and the punch of 10's...... but there is something about the L7's that i DONT like..... mainly, the sound quality.

Round sound waves were not meant to be pushed through a square speaker..... IMO

Care to explain how a sound wave is round?

Anyway, I think that square speakers were a rather bad idea. A typical round cone shaped cone is strong due to it's shape, even if it is made of something as 'weak' as paper. However, the square cone needs extra bracing and support ridges, that result in higher cone mass. This drops efficiency compared to a round speaker. Thus you need to feed the L7 pleny of power.

I agree that an L7 typically is not the best sounding sub out there. But, if you aren't too concerned about making a cello sound like a cello, but instead want Lil John to knock you sensless, go for the L7's. They will do the job.

i wish i could get the picsture out of head into words, perhaps ROUND wasnt the best word to use for us sound people.....

the waves themselves of pure tones, as in sinewaves and such. Sound travels in an exponentially growing pattern outwards, equidistant from its point of origin, unrestricted of course..... i was simply stating basically that speakers have been round for years for a reason.....=P

Perhaps sand, you can enlighten ME on a better way to explain myself

As you said,

Its this exponential growth that makes the source's shape irrelevant.

But I know what you mean. The way I see it, it is possible for some of these non-traditional cones to have different resonances due to inconsitent contour and flat areas. This could lead to a different timbre. Of course, the same could be said for comparing cone materials as well.

well in my travels the same IS said for the cone material tampering with the timbre of it all.....

but yes, that does basically make my point moot, although im not sure how it would IRRELEVANT..... just perhaps, not AS relevant as origianally thought......

since the mathematics of a hemisphere denotes whichever direction something is reflected off of the surface, it will be directed all to the same point. this gives me the idea that if, for example, a square were used, the "collisions" of sound waves would slightly distort the quality....

just athought though

Hm.......interesting, to say the least.

Ok....since I can't put a diagram up, look at it this way.

In a cone speaker, all surfaces on a given diameter are equidistant from the target (your ear). A speaker does not move as one piece, really. Anything rigid enough to move totally "as one" doesn't exist. Anyway.

What a square speaker will do, in effect, is create a "phasing" situation. When the electrical field hits the speaker coil, and causes the speaker to move, the sound wave generated by the sides of the cone will be milliseconds ahead of the wave generated by the corners, by the time they reach your ears. The simple reason is that the corners of a square speaker are acutally farther from your ears than the sides, by quite a large margin.

Using a square cone also introduces a "focusing effect", which decreases the spatial coverage of a given sound wave. It's not as noticable in woofers, because of the wide sweep of the frequency, and is definitely not noticable in a small environment, like a car. You're so close to the originating signal that any deviance would show up about 100 feet behind you (if you're facing the speaker). For example, a round cone in a PA speaker-powered enclosure (think stadium size, your last live concert), has a massive coverage range, because the cone radiates sound in an equidistant manner to all areas. Now, take that same sound source, and run it through a square speaker........you'll have a definite "sweet spot" where the bass sounds the best, and as you get father out, the bass will actually go out of phase with itself, and die much sooner than a round cone.

Basically, a square, triangular, or other non-round shape speaker is terribly inefficient, in a large environment. Yes, I know, there's horn tweeters, but the CONE in those is still round.......the horn around it is a pressure-sensitive focusing device, and is actually designed to project high frequencies farther.......sort of like putting your thumb over a running faucet.

Personally, if you're talking auto sound systems, you're so close to the source of the sound, the shape of the speaker doesn't matter much. When you're talking low, sub 100hz frequencies, when you're in the driver's seat you're still within the first cycle of the sound wave, so you won't notice a difference. Get 100 feet out, and it's a different story altogether.

Shouldn't it be "square waves" comming out of a square speaker?

just so everyone knows I was joking...

NAT, PLEASE DONT KILL ME! i didnt know theyd start a physics discussion about sound waves due to my ? about speakers...lol NOT MY FAULT....

But anyway...I would love to see the pics of your stuff...if you wouldnt mind, i'd rather them emailed, bman215@cox.net

I'll get back to you in about a week on wether i am really planning on buying them from you...i look forward to it! thanks

HA HA good one Hoedizzy

FnF, also a good point.. I only bring this up, because i have sat in a car with two L7's, and i just didnt like their quality. I even had the guy let me tune the whole setup to the way i would like it, just to discount his EQ settings being the culprit.... there was still something missing IMO

Either way...again.... everyones ear is different...=D
