|
|
I hope this isn't out of place here but I figured you guys probably would have run across this problem before.
I've got my two home computers on a Netgear (wired) router (model: RP614v2), it's your basic 4 port cable/dsl router. Connected to a Motorolla SB5100 Cable modem, running COMCAST cable service. Internet works fine, I can play games on both computers online at the same time, other than what I consider common lagg and hickups it dosen't seem to have a problem. The other day however, I tried to transfer some MP3's from computer A to computer B and it tells me it'll take 31 minutes to transfer 56mb. That's not right!....so I try a smaller file, 5mb...takes 2 minutes and I got a "explorer not responding" error twice when copy/paste into the network folder on computer B.
So basically, symptoms are, both computers seem fine connecting to intenet, but on the LAN something is seriously slowing file transfers down.
Now I've updated the router firmware yesterday, no remedy. I've tried resetting IP's on both computers, resetting the router itself. None of that helped. Disabled windows firewall on both computers.
Went through the LAN setup on both computers making sure file and printer sharing is on and the folders I wanted to copy to/from were shared. Also made sure they both had the same workgroup name even though they're running Windows XP.
In the router settings it shows both computers, I've got full "green" lights on for both computers meaning they're running at 100mbps. I've checked cables for visible wear or problems, nothing.
Now the only thing I can think of that is different on this LAN is that we've recently switched from Sprint DSL to the COMCAST cable service and I suppose this problem would coincide with that because last time I transfered a file it was on the DSL setup and it worked fine.
So if anyone can give me some help on this I would really appreciate it;
Computer A: athlon xp 2000, 512mb ddr 333, 80gb hd, PCI linksys eithernet card, geforce fx 5700 agp 8x pro, PCI SB Live soundcard.
Computer B: athlon xp 3000, 512mb ddr333, 80gb hd, On-board eithernet port, geforce fx 5200 8x agp, Onboard snd.

Well, I was transfering from my desktop (computerA/user/desktop) to the second computers shared folder (computerB/user/sharedmusic). It wasn't to the shared folder on my computer but the shared folder on her computer.
But I've also tried just transfering striaght from my desktop to Computer B's documents folder and it'll copy over but it's just extremely slow. 5mb takes 2 minutes, where as before it took about 2 seconds.
But I think I'm gonna try transfering files over a simple workgroup switch and see if I run into the same thing, then it's probably one of the computers and not the router. _________________ Current Computer Specs:

One thing you could try doing is manually specifying the Network cards speed.By Default windows sets these up with "Auto Sensing" which most of the time works great!!
although, ive found sometimes i get weird slow problems or dropping out network connectivity.
to change these setting (on windows XP) right click on my network places, go to properties, right click Local Area Connection and click properties, you should see a new window with your network card, click the configure button next to this. now the next part does change sometimes from network card brands and different drivers, but, its usually under the advanced tab, and you should have something along the lines of "Link Speed/Duplex Mode" click on this and from the drop down box choose 100Mb Full Duplex.
hopefully this may fix your problem, otherwise you can try pinging the other machine on your network and see what response times you get?
eg. go to start, run, cmd then type ping <computernamegoeshere>
goodluck!!! |

Have you checked your DNS?
If it is misconfigured then comp A is trying to resove comp B via the internet and not the LAN. That would take ages.
Did you manually the IP's or are you using DHCP? |
