I have the exact same problem in windows xp and I know others who do as well, I don't know what causes the problem, I have not found any way to fix it, I think windows just has a decent ammount of inefficent coding, and this is the big part of it, I remember Windows 98 when shutting down took less than a second, but in Windows XP shutting down takes twice as long as it takes to boot up, I've almost givin up on XP shutdown and just do a force shutdown, and gone to using linux a bit more.

there are a number of little things that XP does for us now that in making it run better, causes other sorts of issues.
to speed things up...you might try disabling the auto restore feature....this application takes a few seconds from your shut down time to save changes and updatesthat you might have made...
there are compromises you must make...decide what is more important to you...
also, there are a few things that have to do with IE (temp files) which XP saves for you, to make things faster for you the next time you start the PC.
In order to make things better while using XP...a few changes had to be made in the way it shuts down....it's kinda "tit for tat".
you cannot please everyone, all the time.
I am not sure of anyone else's skill level or willingness to reload an OS if some thing goes wrong, but there are places to modify ALL settings with Admin priviledges.
To be on the safe side, I will suggest the following:
you might want to try one of the power tools offered by MS called "TweakUI". This program makes a few changes for you that will keep you from turning off other features that have dependancies which could be accidently disabled.

I have experienced this only after using Windows Update. Have you installed 811493? This hotfix is notorious for slowing system performance. I am not sure about saving settings, though. My guess is what I stated earlier: something to do with a hotfix.

Disabling the "clear page file" at shut down worked for me. I also removed some of "Win Updates" as a try but ended up reinstalling them. They didn't seem to do much as far as speed up was concerned. _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

Ishtim, do you think this could be related to the pagefile being severly fragmented? I believe that defragging the hard drive does not do the whole disk. Ever see a thin red line after defragging? I believe that is the pagefile if it is fragged. You can see this after anaiyzing the drive: Click on "View Report" and scroll down. Too bad Windows doesn't have a built-in tool to defrag this part of the drive. It can be done by changing the pagefile size back to zero and rebooting, though.

it generally slows down after you've added programs and stuff..its normal..everytime u format, it's fast for the first coupl eweeks, after that, it slows down ..IF you really want to, you could defrag it, but i find it doesnt help much..so i jsut leave it..del things you dont need for eg. icons, shortcuts, things in the start menu, organize them and all.
