System "Hesitates" After Period Of Inactivity

Hey guys,

80-90% of the time after going to use my computer after a brief period of inactivity (say 30 mins or so), it "hesistates" for a few seconds before working nomally again. This can best be described as clicking on start programs and not having them open, mp3's stuttering, IE not loading instantly, or the hard drive/mouse temporaily being unresponsive. It lasts no more than 10 or 20 seconds usually.

I know this might be normal if I had my hard drives set to spin down on inactivity, which I don't. The only power setting I have is to turn off the monitor after about 15 mins, but that shouldn't affect anything else. The problem isn't a very big deal, but everyone on here is really on top of their game and I was wondering if you had any idea what does this.

I'm running XP Pro on an Athlon XP 1800 with 512MB of Crucial PC2700 memory. Thanks in advance for your comments...

be sure that your hibernation is disabled.
all power saving functions are set to never, except for the monitor.

what type of drive(s) are you using?...configuration etc.

Yea, it sounds like hibernation is enabled.

Nibernation causes more lockups than it saves on power.

As DMW said, disable everything ecept the monitor turning off, and that includes the screensaver.

The first thing I did when I installed XP was permanently disable both Hibernation and System Restore in the settings and services...I didn't want either bloating my system. Lol. I only have two IDE devices right now - my 80 GB Western Digital HD (Primary Master) and a TDK CD-RW drive (Secondary Master). I think I can rule out any IDE conflict.

I was wondering if my K7S5A maybe goes into some kind of standy power-saving mode, but I haven't really heard anything about that. I also thought maybe it was an issue with the memory, but again, that's just speculation. I know every system has its quirks - perhaps this hesitation of sorts is mine.

if you suspect the MOBO then go thru the bios looking for power saving options....

it's a place to start.....

in another thread somewhere here I posted a link to a stie specifically on tweaking winXP.....see if you can find.
