I use DVD X COPY, what is so much better about DVD Shrink? Are the backups better quality video or is the sound better or what? Is the interface easier to use? _________________ ABIT IC7 MAX 3, Corsair PC4000 Pro, P4 2.6C @3.23 GHz 1:1, 2.5-4-4-7, 2 WD Raptors in RAID 0 |

DVDShrink is great and you should get it.
As for me, I use InterVideo's DVD Copy. (quality wise)
Here's a very nice guide that reviews some backup-dvd tools. _________________

I cant believe you are asking about copying copyrighted material on an open forum. This is illegal activity and dont talk about it on TN again.

actually, it IS illegal to make "Backup" copies of copyrighted DVD moveis. that is how the MPAA got rid of 321Studios (the makers of DVD X Copy). and why you cannot purchase any software for this purpose.
as Weaz' said...Questions about duplicating copyrighted material should not be posted here _________________ Yeah....... ok |

Well backing up your own stuff is permitted. It's considered "fair use". This link http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/index.html explains some of that law. As I don't condone stealing or pirating games, software, etc., I see making copies of my own stuff totally legit.
I know this is a sensitive issue on this forum, but I thought having a link to the actual law may be a good start for someone that wants to learn more.
But again, just as I wouldn't go out and steal a car cause "those damn car companies just have too much money", I wouldn't steal software either, cause it brings down the quality of what companies are willing to invest. |

^^^^^^Agreed
although also agreed.....i really think this convorsation should be brought down to a level of pure technicality and not really pursue this topic.....it is a tightrope we're all walking on here and falling either way is a long way down...... _________________

yes it is legal to make copies of your own material. But when that material has copyright protection on it then it is not legally "your" material. And by circumventing any copy protection is illegal activity. This is a very thin line we are talking about here, with "fair use". If it was fair use to be able to copy copyrighted material then 3-2-1 Studios wouldnt have been put out of business. And since this is a boarderline subject please keep TweakNews off of the topic of "How to" on making copies of copyrighted movies. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! Sorry to bump this up
I don't know about the US laws, but here in Canada, you are allowed to make copies of your CDs/DVDs/VHS as long as you own them.
So, to answer gmoney's question; you can use some softwares that crack/remove the copy protection.
I use DVDRegion+CSS Free (Link) to remove that, so I can make legit copies of my movies.
| Quote: | | With DVD Region+CSS Free's help, DVD copy software (such as DVDFab, DVD X Copy, InterVideo DVD Copy, etc.) is able to copy DVD's which are CSS protected! |
Other recommended DVD copying apps:
-DVDShrink (can make your copied DVDs region-free)
-DVD Decrypter _________________

First,
actually guys, the only reason that dvd x copy was deemed illegal was the way in wich it used the origional code to crack the dvd instead of using its own code. And they argued in court that it was stealing because they were using the dvd code to do their work. It is 100% legal to back up all of your media and hammy... i dont know what the hell u were thinking when u said otherwise...
Second,
DONT DOWNLOAD ANY UPDATES FOR DVD X COPY. There are some available but they change you version from one that can copy css disks to one that cant copy css protected disks.
Third,
While on this topic, what do you guys use with dl burners and dl disks? i use xcopyxpress for all of my backups but im getting a new dl burner and want to get full quality and a one to one backup.
Fourth,
Hi all... long time no speak im back on spring break woohoo. |

Let me get this point across, you can only make copies of your own DVDs for back up purposes ONLY!
To state for the record, Tweaknews does not support nor condone illegal copyright infringement activies in any way, shape, or form. _________________ Owner & Administrator

uhm nero should work ( http://www.nero.com/us/ ) .. but i always thought that xpress would let u copy to one disc with out compressing it.. also... you could try like uhm .... clone dvd.. but are you planning on backing up ur dvd movies with dual layer or just putting data and the like on them... ?? _________________ I finally got an award=OFFICIAL ROCKSTEADY AWARD and then one time... at tweaknews dene gave me a A+++++++....
