I just recently bought a new computer and noticed that it was running a bit hotter than i had wanted it to, so i took some advice from my friend and opened up my empty cd bays and stuck as many fans in there as possible, as well as putting some arctic silver 3 grease on the cpu.
this worked for a while and succeeded in lowering my temp by about 5-10 deg celsius, yet i was still not satisfied, when it was then running at 47-50 deg celcius. believing that more is better i purchased myself a volcano 11 cpu fan and heatsink and stuck it on my barton amd xp 2500, that dropped it a few more deg but not as much as i had hoped, it hovers around 45-46 celcius. this confused me a lot because i thot that takin out my old pos factory fan and HS and puttin in a beasty volcano 11 would surely drop it around 40 deg and possibly into the 30's, i may be off my rocker on this one but if anyone has 2 cents to put in it would be greatly appreciated _________________ BARTON AMD 2500+ / ASUS NFORCE 2 DDR 400 8X AGP A7N8X / 512 433 DDR / 420 WATT POW. / GF 4 4600 128 DDR |

oh btw i have been using asus probe to get these measurements and recently(as in the past few minutes) switched to motherboard monitor 5, or MBM 5, but i'm not familiar with it and do not know how to get the correct temp readings because i don't know which temp sensor to put it on under the temperature tab in settings, if anyone knows which one is correct, lemme know :) _________________ BARTON AMD 2500+ / ASUS NFORCE 2 DDR 400 8X AGP A7N8X / 512 433 DDR / 420 WATT POW. / GF 4 4600 128 DDR |

How many fans do you have and could you post some pics of your case inside and out.
Did you remove the black stuff on the heatsink before you added arctic silver 3 on it? _________________ Owner & Administrator

well actually, it ends up that i hadn't put enough grease on the fan, and when i had put the fan on the first time the grease got kinda smudged ending with even less grease on the CPU. but i quickly fixed the problem after taking it apart once again, so now it runs at a comfortable 37-40 degrees celcius _________________ BARTON AMD 2500+ / ASUS NFORCE 2 DDR 400 8X AGP A7N8X / 512 433 DDR / 420 WATT POW. / GF 4 4600 128 DDR |

Did you take the black stuff off of the heatsink before you put the arctic silver on? _________________ Owner & Administrator

with Asus Probe my 2500 runs around 35C when idle, and gets as hot as 50C when i am pushing it. you can also get temp readings in the BIOS hardware monitor. _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

I guess a winking face is really no help...
Anyway, the amd website is full of really good info on this topic, this page in particular: (copy and paste this link into your browser, I couldnt get the URL thingy to work on this one)...

Also here is a link with several mirrors that have the Arctic Silver application video (don't mind the music, it stinks)!
