oh, and make sure you have the "preview" setting on Thumbnail, otherwise you won't see anything.

Yea, I guess I misunderstood. Confused
I don't think TweakUI does anything else to the folder that I could find.

Heh.......sometimes I'm so slow, I amaze myself.

Here's what you do.

Right click on the folder you want a picture for, click Properties, then the Customize tab. I think you can figure out the rest from there........alternately, you can just put a pic in that folder, and it should show up under "thumbnail view".

Okay, I'll give you slow, clock but I'm still not completely sure of what was wanted. dontknow
I'm guessing what he wants to do is give each folder a different background picture within windows explorer, when opened.

Yeah, and I know it can be done. I mean, when you first install Windows, the main system folders have semi-transparent background images, but most of us get rid of them. So, like, when he opens his Music folder, he could have a "desktop background" of the band of the week, or whatever.

I'm looking, I know it's do-able.

Got it.........it only works on the root folder of a drive, though, I can't get it to work in subfolders.

Do this:

In the root directory of your drive (c, d, whichever) create a new file, name it Desktop.ini. Now, open that file, and put this in it.......

[ExtShellFolderViews]

{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}={BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]

Attributes=1

IconArea_Image=background.gif

Now, find a nice, washed-out gif file, and put it in the same root folder, close and re-open Windows Explorer, and you're done. Like I said, it doesn't seem to want to work in subfolders, and I don't know of a way to get it to do every folder at once.

Works fine for me. Make sure of a few things......

1. The desktop.ini file is in the ROOT directory, it won't work in subfolders, so make sure it's under C:

2. Make sure it's a GIF file, if not, just change the extension in the desktop.ini file to match, if it's a jpg or bmp, for example.

3. You have to rename the file you're using for a background to "
background.whatever" obviously.......

Then close Explorer or My Computer and restart it. It should work just fine.

OKIE DOKe... so Im assuming you want to have a background on your folders just like ones for your desktop. You would do this in folder options under the tools menu. I cant remember exactly the sequence but is THIS what your looking for?

Go into the desired folder and make a txt file named "DESKTOP.ini" and put the following into it.

[{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}]
PersistMonikerPreview=%WebDir%\classic.bmp
PersistMoniker=file://Folder Settings\Folder.htt
[ExtShellFolderViews]
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}={BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}
[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=Folder Settings\Background.jpg
IconArea_Text=0x00FFFFFF

Next make a folder within the desired folder called "Folder Settings" copy the desired jpg into it, rename the jpg to "Background.jpg" and then make the "follder settings" folder hidden. Then customise the folder and change its icon, once you apply you should get your pic in the background

Yup, they took that option away in XP. Now all you can do is customize the icon on the folder thumbnail.

Thanks, Xal, I did forget to mention to "hide" the desktop.ini file and pic, it'll work either of our ways.

Umm how would you undo this? Whenever I do it, the Desktop.ini disappears. It's not hidden, it's just gone.

Hmm maybe just a blank desktop.ini...

Edit: Haha yeah that worked...

No if you setup the Desktop.ini with those parameters then that is how the folder is suppose to work, so it thinks there is a background pic when there isn't one. It just made the names of the subfolders disappear unless I highlighted them. You just have to put a blank Desktop.ini back in.

Odd, that.......the first time I tried it, nothing happened, so I just deleted both files. I just tried it again, and deleting the desktop.ini file in that folder put me back to a white background.

I forget where I got that initial fix from, I remember it was from when I went from 98 to XP, and Windowblinds didn't "skin" my backgrounds anymore. I'm sure there's an update somewhere.

You have to have "hide system files" unchecked. Desktop.ini is a system file
