Trying to connect 2 computers to the net with ICS.
The first is a celeron 900 with winME that is connected via cable modem to the net, the other is a PIII 500 with winXP.
I can get the network to run (useing a cross-linked cable) but there's no internet access for the second comp.
It converts site names into IP addresses, but it doesn't recieve any data from them. (ping time out)
Firewalls are tured off on both computers.
The internet connection is done with VPN.
IP is set to auto (on comp No.2).
Any thoughts? _________________ P4 3.0c @ 3.6Ghz

ICS - Internet connection sharing.
Connecting one PC to the other (no router).
TCP/IP installed.
crosslinked - crossover (sorry, I don't write in english very often)
The Icon for "connected" shows up, seems to be working fine. _________________ P4 3.0c @ 3.6Ghz

usu. ics is a piece of garbage and rarely works... and when u get it to werk you can never really remember what you did.. my 2cents would be just buy a cheap router or something.. or take like an entire day and go through the tutorials and troubleshooters.. cuz ics is often problemataic.....
you should be able to just share the internet connecttion to the other machine and it should get the connection... i mean its supposed to be as simple as that but its not _________________ I finally got an award=OFFICIAL ROCKSTEADY AWARD and then one time... at tweaknews dene gave me a A+++++++....

ICS rarely (if ever) works with a combination of OS's. WinME is horrible, at best, anyway, and couldn't even connect securely wiht Windows 98, let alone with XP.
I agree, either get an inexpensive router, or a second copy of XP. With XP to XP machines, ICS works just fine (I've been doing it for two years now, on four different machines), but it never worked reliably with different Windows versions. In either case, you're looking at similar costs. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

^^^^ agreed...mixing OS's in this case can be a pain. Actually, mixing OS's on ANY network is more of a pain than matching ones....lol
and dont worry about the lingo, i just wanted to be sure we were on the same page...=D
my suggestion....like everyone else, cheap router _________________

Check with M$, but you can only 1/2 network ME and XP...XP's securities won't allow it.
You can use ICS with ME and 98 or with 2000 and XP and 2003 but not ME/98 and 2000/XP. _________________ .

Nope...your friend can pick up an inexpensive router, and at least get the advantage of network address translation from it. I would HIGHLY suggest getting a name brand one that has some decent firewalling in it.
The ME machine on the internet without protection is likely already messed up. _________________ .

ok
Can a router work with the crossover cable?
It's pretty long (15m), I don't wanna replace it... _________________ P4 3.0c @ 3.6Ghz

no you will need a straight through cable. The router acts as a crossover. _________________

unless you get a router with an uplink port you will be able to use one crossover cable connecting the router to pc... _________________ I finally got an award=OFFICIAL ROCKSTEADY AWARD and then one time... at tweaknews dene gave me a A+++++++....

Um.......no..........one end of a crossover cable is wired differently from the other end, and only works with direct computer to computer connections. You have to use a straight cable to connect a router to a computer, the router is wired that way. Has nothing to do with uplink ports or any such thing, every port on every router is wired for a straight cable. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

well...umm, that isn't exactly true eithe FnF..
my linksys SX41 router ports are Auto MDI / MDI-X, meaning they sense whether you have plugged in a regular, or crossover cable, you can use either one.
and some routers have a "normal/Uplink" switch, to enable use of a crossover cable _________________ Yeah....... ok |

I've got an Edimax 10/100 switch that can be used with crossover cables.
can't a router do the same? _________________ P4 3.0c @ 3.6Ghz

There are auto-negotiating ports on a lot of modern routers that will work either way, with either kind of cable on all ports.
But... although it might be a nice feature, it would be down in my list of reasons to buy a particular router. _________________ .

Ok, Here is how you do it
1 set up computer with XP to ip 192.168.0.1 and enable connection sharing
2 set up PC 2 with ip 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS1 & 2 whatever you use (go to command "cmd" and type ipconfig /all on your XP machine and get them from there.)
If your xover cable is working this WILL work, I know cuz I did it last week for a client with win 98, win ME, win 2000 and windows XP machines.
Post back if you need more detailed instructions or if you have any questions. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Oh, you should have the DNSs set up on both machines or none not one or the other, I don't know why but it has always given me problems when I set up on one but not the other. DNSs should be the same on both machines unless your ISP has more than 2 in whic case any combination will be fine. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Right.......those didn't work before, at least not reliably. I don't really suggest using them. If you're having luck with it....... _________________ Big enough to scare you |
