I am adding a CD burner to my machine that already has a CD-ROM. Primary master is the HDD, Secondary master is the CD-ROM. Where is the best place for the CD burner???

The best place in your setup would have to be seconday master.

If in the future you add a secondary harddrive, put the new harddrive as master and bump the burner down to secondary slave.

yeah, secondary master is where burners "like to be"

Also, if you plan on duplicating CDs.....move the existing CDROM to the primary slave. This will allow the traffic to be shared across both controllers and not jam up just the one.

DMW, never have CD copying on the same IDE channel. If they are doing on the fly copying, having them on the same channel can cause problems and conflicts while transferring data.

OK! Let me make sure I got this right...

Primary Master - HDD
Secondary Master - CD burner
Primary Slave - Existing CDROM

Then, I can use either CD for reading and the "Burner" for copying???

that's pretty much exactly what I said...almost word for word

Although, today's products are a little more tolerant that those of just a few years ago. The software may warn you of potential errors, but neither of my Plextors have ever made a coaster because of having them on the same controller (this is the case in my wife's machine). With "Burn-Proof" and a few similar technologies of today built into the burners...I am able to use applications like Nero, Alcohol120% and Blindwrite to create just about anything I want.

I credit advancements in the MOBO chipsets and quality burner production for helping today's user being almost trouble free. (you're going to get what you pay for tho!)
