OK, I just got to my GF's house, and her rig is goin' all screwy. A lot of services got turned on for startup and a new user account got created. There's no virus according to AVG...I'm not sure what happened.

Anyway, when I ctrl alt del, instead of bringing up the task manager, I get a "Windows Security" window with 6 options:
Lock Computer
Log Off
Shut Down
Change Password
Task Manager
Cancel

How do I make it go straight to the task manager like it used to? OH, and any ideas what the hell could've happened?

Thanks for the help, and I'll check back soon....

BTW, her comp has had SP2 on it for a few months, so it wasn't a stealth install my M$

This is a hijack situation, me thinks....I saw one similar a while back.
Might have been a trojan....
One was brought to me yesterday that wouldn't let you do anything in task manager except view it, AND...the damn thing deleted the msconfig command, so I couldn't do a selective start up. It was a new one that had just been found I learned. So I had to image the OS back to the original load.

Does she have some way to restore? That might be easiest in the long run.

I don't think it was a hack. I simply deleted the other user(I can't remember the name...it was odd tho...almost looked like a network admin account?). I can access msconfig just fine, as well as the task manager...it just doesn't ctrl alt del straight to the task manager.
No she's not on a domain.
AVG still has nothing...hmmm I'll check some more tomorrow or Saturday...I'm heading home now, feel free to post more ideas...

No...I didn't have time tonight, I may try it tomorrow. But there's only 1 user on her computer...her. It usually doesn't even display a welcome screen, just like my rig. We only PW up when it's LAN time.

fast user switching being disabled would cause the three fingered salut to open that instead of direct to task manger, I suggest checking that first, after that... kick it a few times.. i dunno lol

fast user swicthing is a no no. this opens the door for some malicous programs. It can be a vulnerability on your computer. And even with out it oyu should be able to go directly to your task manager using CTRL+ALT+DEL.
As @old has said this is probably a trojan. AVG may not find it either. You can also try housecall ( http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ )or McAfee online virus scan. These normally will pick up stuff like that.

And if you dont have access to the control panel you can still contol what starts up with windows. By using HiJack This! you can get rid of problematic programs. Fitz would be able to give more info on that though, he uses it alot.

I just ran that, and it found nothing. Ran AdAware and Spybot S&D and they found about a dozen things total, which have been removed.

The problem seems to have sorted itself out. I cleaned a few older programs from her comp while AVG was running the other night, and I reset all the settings to how they were. Everything is running fine now, and no settings have changed themselves since then. I even did a marathon boot, shutdown, boot, restart, shutdown session(about 10 total start-ups) over 2 hours or so the other night, and everything stayed like it was supposed to.

Thanks for all the responses everyone, and I'm glad everything got fixed up! :) *PHEW*
