From digg (www.digg.com)
Quote:
You Won't Be Able to Escape SP2 Any Longer
On April 12, all blocking mechanisms will expire and Windows XP and XP SP1 systems will automatically download and update to SP2.

Huh....if you don't want it...aren't ready for it...here's a hint>>>TURN OFF AUTO UPDATES IN SERVICES MANAGEMENT.

There was that clear?....NFW will windows over-ride it's own services control.

Auto updating is for rookies anyway. I like to be in control of when I update.

^^^^Wisdom.

Seriously though, this is going to screw a LOT of computers up. I've already had to go fix two peoples comps because auto-update DLed SP2. Full format/reinstall, BLEH! One of them even had to buy a new copy of XP Gotta love buggy, necessary[/sarcasm] software

"Prior to the release of Windows XP SP2, Microsoft offered up work-arounds and other tools companies could apply to keep the massive security update from installing on PCs with Automatic Update enabled. "

If you have Auto Update disabled, you get NO updates, at all, and MS has no control over that. You can continue to avoid installing it indefinitely, if you want.

Personally, if by now, you haven't already installed it, it's time for a reformat and clean install anyway. You probably have at least two years worth of half-arsed fixes installed, where SP2 "fixed the fixes". I've been using it since the pre-release, and it's noticably improved my system stability.

Yeah, I have auto updates disabled too. I thought he meant that that would get overridden. Now I'm ok.

I reformatted in August and I don't know if I want to do it yet. Also, does SP 2 increase gaming performance and performance in general or is it just a stablity and security increasement?

SP2 has a lot of enhancements in it...as for gaming...it has directx 9c native to it. It has some hardware support additions also. Like FnF said it has all the previous update patchwork, smoothed out.

But, as many here have found....it is best to reload with a fresh SP2...nobody wants it crammed down their throats.

By now all the problems have been smoothed out, you can really only benefit from it now. And 2old is right, fresh install is the only way to go.
