I bought a digital coaxial cable and plugged into the SPDIF port and it worked without that extra adapter. The control center picked up coaxial input and I was able to set it to Digital output. It doesn't sound much different for music, but I guess it's ok. I'm too lazy to take two trains and then walk for 10 minutes just to return the $20 cable.

Anyway, there's still some lag from the soundcard so I think it's a USB problem. I have no intention of paying $70 for an optical cable, thx.

Because I have a laptop lol.

IBM Thinkpad R40

I'm in college and therefore did not wish to drag my PC with me.

I was hoping to do something to fix that but I don't think I can. I have more than enough RAM so It's a processor issue and those aren't really things you can play with in a laptop.

However, the digital connection sounds so much better. I even turned off CMSS because the music sounds good now except for the skippy stuff.

Sounds like you have to much crap running in the background hogging resources.

I could run a diagnostic and check how my resources are allocated. I doubt that there are any conflicts or anything like that though.

However, I know for a fact that I have plenty of free RAM (like 400 MB) so memory should not be a problem.

Kill the programs running in the background.

Ya know, all those things down at the bottom by the clock.

How many icons do you have there?

Only 5 including the volume control for my sound card. I have over 400 MB free of RAM which SHOULD be enough lol.

Anyways, getting rid of virtually all of my bg processes did nothing helpful (as I expected). I'm still trying things out. I don't think this is as simple as a ctrl+alt+delete

Anti-virus may be scanning the USB connection.
And, how about the latest chipset drivers?

Well Norton DOES have auto-protect enabled but wouldn't you have it do the same? Disabling it does nothing useful.

USB is 2.0 and working just fine.

Chipset drivers? I am a little unclear what you are talking about.

There is your problem, kill norton auto protect or uninstall it altogether and install AVG Free edition.

Norton is a killer for system performance.

Even with 7xx MB of RAM?

I mean I'll try it. I think my school offers the license for some anti-virus problem so I'll look into it. Or I could just go with AVG (if what's offered is substantially different).

I shall update soon.

Idiot me just realized that resources and RAM are two different beasts so ignore that.

Anyway, it seems that I can get VirusScan. I believe that's McAfee. Thoughts?

No, use AVG, it is a better antivirus and uses practically no resources.

The free version can be downloaded here:

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Uninstall Norton and remember to go into add/remove programs after the uninstall and remove the live update and livereg which are installed separately from the antivirus itself.

Unfortunately, that plan didn't give an improvement.

I disagree about Norton Antivirus completely!

It's the best antivirus program period and will not impact performance one iota.

Turning off the autoprotect is simple, right click the system tray icon and turn it off. I have found no difference in performance turning it off or on. I leave my on all the time. Check it out for yourself, don't take one guy's word for it to trash it. No offense to the guy who doesn't like it. I do and wouldn't use anything else.

well this is from Logitech.

Quote:
Stutter

A stuttering sound track is an indication of either insufficient or conflicting computer resources. Check to make sure that your computer has sufficient processor power and memory to handle the applications you are running, especially if you are using a software DVD player. Defragmenting your hard drive may also help. If you are sure you have sufficient resources, check to make sure that you don't have any conflicting IRQ or DMA channels.

We have also seen some software DVD player/sound card combinations that cannot properly output a Dolby Digital or DTS signal through the sound card's S/PDIF digital connector. (S/PDIF is a generic term for either coax or optical digital connections.) The result, when using a Z-680 hooked up to a S/PDIF connector, is a stuttering soundtrack. As mentioned, this stuttering is caused by the computer, not the Z-680 speakers. Switching the software DVD player's sound output to the 5.1 analog outputs will generally solve this problem.

Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! That is funny!

Norton is know to be a HUGE resource hog for what it does compared to any other antivirus other than Mcaffee. I have used them all and AVG is the best.

But that is not to discuss here.

Let's keep this on topic of the Z-5500.

Yeah we can stay on topic but I'm not going to let you get away with false claims.

People aren't running Windows 95 anymore running P2s with 64 megs of ram. (at least most of us don't, heh heh).

Your arguments are totally invalid for today's systems. I can run benchmarks with either NAV on, off, not installed, and there is not any appreciable difference.

I'm a big time gamer with top notch equipment. I sure would not have NAV if I noticed any performance issues.

OK, I'm done. I'll stay on topic now.

(man I hate not being able to edit in this forum, grrrrrr).

Clarification. With Windows 95 and 98, resource using used to be an issue. With Windows XP, this is a thing of the past. This OS is meant to use resources (otherwise what is the computer for, if it's not going to be used) and does so quite adequately. It's is also meant to use a lot of memory. If you got it, use it to get the full benefits of the system.

People get too hung up on keeping the memory use and resource use low. What is the point of doing that? That's like having a 427 engine and just using it to cruise down main street at 25 mph. That's not when that engine runs the best and not when it's using it's full potential.

Anyway, now I'm done. (I think).

You started it, I responded. Remove the posts if you wish, I'm not going to copy them anywhere.

If you're going to start removing posts that don't stay on topic, I imagine you would be editing about every one. You're the mod, do whatever you want.

Next time YOU don't stay on topic, don't be so surprised when someone responds.

Lighten up man.
