try using a windows 98SE boot-disk and clicking boot with CD-Rom support. Then put your CD in and type the command line of the .exe file to restore your system. I also have an old system(Compaq Presario 4716 P1 ) I only have a 3 gig hdd so I constantly have to reformat. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

The problem is the cdrom driver can not see the cdrom when the floppy drive is installed instead of the cdrom drive, ie when booting from a floppy disk.
You need to copy the cdrom driver to the hard drive to enable you to boot up off of the hard drive and load the cdrom driver.
The windows 98 boot disk uses the cdrom driver named oakcdrom.sys.
-Create a drirectory on the hard drive called cdrom.
-Copy the oakcdrom.sys file into the cdrom directory on the hard drive.
-Copy the mscdex.exe file into the cdrom drirectory on the hard drive.
Then you need to create 2 files and place them in the root directory of the hard drive.
The file config.sys should contain...
device=c:\cdrom\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd001
The file autoexec.bat should contain...
c:\cdrom\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001
You can create the autoexec.bat and config.sys on your working computer and save them on a floppy disk to be copied to the laptop.
This should allow the laptop to boot from the c: drive (if you formated it with the /s option to make it bootable) while the cdrom drive is installed in the laptop instead of the floppy drive. |

well since this thread started in Jan and its now Jun, it may not make a difference. But at least the information is there for future people to see.
And yes he did have it formatted and then he couldnt boot from the cd-rom. The advice from Fitz would then allow the system to be booted from the cd-rom. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!
