|
|
I just bought a 60g hdd, to use as a second. My question is: If I install it as a master first (Primary controller)boot disk(new install XP) and remove my current hdd. In other words replace my current harddrive. Can I later use my current drive again as c: master, and make the new drive the slave with xp installed on it even though it was used as a boot drive. Will xp see the second drive and give me the option to dual boot?(both with exact same os) I want the second drive mainly for storage. or will I have to reformat it? The reason I'm doing it this way is cause I'm getting an error in event viewer>system "event id 15", which says "the device\device\harddisk1\d,is not ready for access yet". This error happens everytime I boot the machine, and am concerned that my new 100g sp/ed wd drive is going to fail. I just finished building the same system for my wife. The only difference is she has a 2ghz celeron vs my 2.4b, and her system has a 120g wd drive and no drive error. I've never had more than 1 drive before. But this would be a great help, as I would be able to use the system if the orignal drive failed and had to rma it. Hope this wasn't to confusing Thanks, Geo |

nope....you CANNOT have two HDD in the same PC both with boot sectors! this will ruin BOTH operating systems......
what you might want to try is a third party boot program like those found here....
http://www.tucows.com/system/boot95.html
I have completely hosed three PCs trying to run a HDD with a boot sector different than that of the Master HDD.....remeber...only one boot.ini file can be present. |

| I want to thank everyone for their help with this problem(not!). Needless to say, I won't be coming back to this site for any help! Over 90 people looked at my post, and only one gave any advice, on a fairly novice question on hdd's. I went through holy hell trying to fined out what the error was, and if my 100g hdd was failing! I found out by myself, with no help, and I won't pass on what I found here! God forbid I may help someone else with the same mobo! Geo |

If this was such a novice question then...why was it a problem? Further more I did reply to what question you asked:

As for the dual boot part of the question, it's moot...you cannot have two simultaneous HDD in the box both with boot ini files.
Possibly the problem is that you were very unclear on what information you were looking for....and gave no relevant details about your hardware.

As for the "event id 15" a simple search with google reulted in this response:
Event ID: 15
Source: [scsi miniport driver]
Description: The device, \Device\ScsiPort1, is not ready for access yet.
Event ID 15 indicates that the device is not ready. This can be the result of SCSI host adapter configuration issues or other problems. Check with the manufacturer for updated firmware, drivers, or known issues. This could also indicate a malfunctioning device. This error occurs at the device level; the cluster software is not likely to be involved.
Perhaps your "personal confuser" (as you put it) got the best of ya. |
