| I just got a Netgear 802g wireless router that I wanted to use to connect my laptop and desktop in a LAN but I only have dial up internet -- no broadband. And I didn't care about sharing internet anyway. Just wanted a local network. When ever the router is hooked up though, it wants to hook me up to internet service thru the ethernet port. I can't use my dial up because the browser always goes back to this Netgear URL. How can I convince the router that I don't want hi speed internet, just a LAN???!! |

You got the wrong peace of gear my friend. You cant make a High speed router go 56k. This is why its trying to force you. Go buy a wireless PCMCIA card for that laptop and go high speed. _________________

| no, he doesnt want to go highspeed at all. He wants to continue to use dial up and have a wireless network. Um... I dont know anything about netgear so i cant help you, sorry, perhaps someone else, nate, knows how to set it up without an internet connection. When you connect it to the computers, cant you skip the internet connection part, thats what i did with my router. |

frnchpplesuck has it right. I don't want any internet sharing between the computers, just LAN.
The Router is a WGR 614 v4
(I could give up and use wires, but then they win!). |

I'm not sure what the settings on a netgear router are off the top of my head, but somewhere in there is the option to set the router as an A.P only ( access point) the router will no longer try to connect to the internet ( routing / NAT is dissabled).
I assume that you set the router up using the setup / installation CD, in which case it changed your web browser settings to connect through LAN instead of dial up. You need to change these connection options back to your dial up config. That should get things working as you want.

I have a Netgear router/adsl, albeit a different model, but I'm sure they're use similar wording/settings across all their products. Anyways, you'll need to look for an option called "Connect automatically, as Required" under a menu item called "WAN Setup". This will stop your router trying to connect to the internet.
Then if you have a "Basic Settings" page then there there should be an option called "NAT (Network Address Translation" under which you are presented with two radio buttons one is selected, which is Enable. You need to select Disable.
That's a guide for my particular router, but I'm sure that you have something very close to that on your router.
Good luck. _________________
