| I'm getting frequent probelms with my nforce2 onboard sound. When I'm playing a game or listening to music, randomly my sound will turn to crap. It gets distorted and crackled. Like its coming from speakers with ripped cones. If i close the program creating the sound, and reopen it, the sound comes back fine. The only thing i can see would be the issue, my sound is sharing irq with my usb root hub. Any thoughts? |

welcome to TN.
how about a few details on your setup?
mobo / version / bios / additional hardware / OS / etc...
(my guess would be an a7n8x deluxe ver <2?)
even though it's prob an easy fix! |

I also have the same problem at least in certain games (Battlefield 1942)! I use Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 in the normal speaker jack and have the board setup for 2 speakers. Its setup with the "sub" on the floor (under the desk ~1m away) and the L and R channel speakers are about 0.5m from the Monitor and CPU case. The sound "croc" described is almost like distortion and once it starts you must kill the app and restart whatever it is you are running and then it is gone. It seems totally intermittent but it does happen often... _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

yes, I am VERY familiar with the sound.
try is reducing the hardware acceleration on the sound device.
right click on sound icon in task bar
"adjust audio properties"
under the volume tab at the bottom next to "speaker volume" select "advanced"
then the "performance" tab
then back off the acceleration to none....as well as the sample rate.
try the game!
I had the same issue with my Live Drive! in the game Iron Storm. My resolution was to remove the sound card and use the onboard audio for a while till I finish it...then it goes back in. Iron Storm was the ONLY place where I got this issue. BF1942 / MoHAA / UT02 / Unreal2 /Tribes2 / Spearhead / Road to Rome, etc...all were just fine.
or
disable EAX support in the games.
it has something to do with the sound cache not being cleared as needed. |

Also there is a new set of nforce2 drivers out there.
Update and see if it helps. _________________ Owner & Administrator

I hope that is a good fix for you....but people like myself that also have the issue, that do not have the NForce audio are still left wondering.
I am looking into WinXP as the culpret here. |

OK! Got the latest patch for nForce 2, loaded it and BAM! my CD-ROM has issues. Looked at device manager and I get the yellow ! mark on the IEEE 1394 OHCI certified controller. WTH? So I removed the driver, and all is fine. I then tried again and stepped through disallowing the IEEE driver installation and the same thing hapens again... ! I ended ep rolling back to the original set of nForce drivers that came with the mobo and everything is OK!
Any clues Honorable Masters of Tweaks??? _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton
