Thanks DMW. this might seem like a weird question, so bare with it. I hear people say that faster memory gives them more potential to overclock their cpu. whats the story on that? also If I were to get a 266fsb proccessor, would it be pointless to get pc2700 ram. I just cant figure it out. could I run the processor at 266fsb, well I'm running the ram at a higher speed, and would it take full advantage of that?

For instance, lets say I got an AMD Athlon XP 2200+, and used PC3200, or PC2700 ram with it. Would could I keep the original speeds of the ram, or would I have to lower it?

but I dont think I really need that, so I think I might go with a lower speed of cpu, for instance the AMD Athlon XP 2100+, and some cheap but good kinston hyper-x ram. So my only problem is the ram and cpu, once again can I use a 266fsb proccessor with PC2700 DDR333 ram, without downgrading the ram speed?



Thank you so much, and I'm sorry for being, well, kind of conservative on ordering my computer parts and asking you guys so many questions, but this is the last time, and I'm ordering either the specs above, or a cheaper version of with, as I said before, less ram, lower cpu speed, and a smaller harddrive, to save some money.

Ram speeds and CPU FSB speeds are completely different entities altogether.

You can run your CPU at 266FSB and your ram at full speed at the same time seeing that they are completely different buses on your motherboard.

Running the ram bus at a higher clock wont show any increase in performance, its best to run the mem/cpu busses at a sync'd speed. If you plan on overclocking, the faster memory is nice, because you can run the o/c cpu bus sync with the mem bus.
