Anyone know how to disable that annoying select box that comes up in XP everytime you plug in hardware, usb's, cd's, etc.? I looked around in tweakxp.com but couldn't find anything.

Any help would be much appreciated. -Chef

You should be able to set the selection box to one certain item you want done evertime you do it.

I always have it set to open and view files.

You can change those settings in gpedit. Go to run and type in gpedit.msc. From there you have to go to user settings or something like that and find it in there. I'm on a network comp now so I can't make sure.

Thanks for answering my question, but gpedit.msc is only in XP pro, not home edition. Is there a XP home equivalent to gpedit.msc?

You probably know this already, but if you don't have XP Pro you can use regedit. I turned it off on my laptop which has home edition. I'll see if I can remember how to do it.

Thanks. I figured there was a registry key I could mess with, I'll see if I can find it.

Simply open my computer. Right click on your cd drive. Click properties. Click the autoplay tab. Click select action to perform. Click take no action. Select apply then ok!!! and tada, no more autoplay.

That gets rid of the CD Drive popup thing but u have to do it for each individual action for the scroll down menu.
Or install nero cause that automatically disables it

TweakXP also allows you to do it in one shot, otherwise, you have to right click on each CD drive, Properties, then the Autoplay tab, and select each function seperately.........the registry edit I've not used, but I do remember reading about it, but in reverse. Somebody wanted the autoplay turned back on, and couldn't figure out how.

I'll see if I can find it later, I'll be out of town for a few days.

here ya go..........you can either do it manually, or just copy and paste it into notepad, save it as autoplay.reg and doubleclick it.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
"AutoRun"=dword:0000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000b5
