I keep seeing a lot of stuff about unlocking your CPU to enable various multiplier setting - Does that mean when I set the motherboard dip switches, the CPU is not changing from the pre-set 11 (for my XP1800)? I set mine to 12.5 on the dips with a bus of 133. When it boots it shows as an XP2000+ and 4Tune software shows it as 1663mhz - This looks right? Is unlocking just for BIOS clocking of the CPU?
If the multiplier can be set with the dip switches, why would I want to unlock the chip?
Also, would I be better off lowering the multiplier and increasing the bus to 166? Am I not running my RAM at the optimum performance settings (DDR PC2700) or is recognised and sorted out by the board?? I'm all confused…….
My case is a Thermaltake Xaser 2 with a couple of the exhaust fans uprated. My CPU runs at around 45C (measured from a separate sensor fixed to bottom of the CPU - The motherboard reports the temp about 10c lower) with a Zalman flower heatsink and silent fan (I know - not the best for clocking).
I'm at a loss with all the bus speeds these days after being out of the game for a few years :-)

Cheers for info,
I have set the multi to 10x and the system bus to 166 and even reduced the CAS to 2 on my ram. All is looking good performance seems pretty fast to me.
No probs with stability (I think this is helped by the board keeping my AGP and PCI's at standard 66/33), Only done a few hours on it so far thought.
Temps are fine 38c - 42c reading direct from chip (28c - 31c reported by the mother board)
I did notice that my RAM is set to 333 by the system although now I have set it manually. So all is well and I'm a bit clearer on it all.
Cheers

Good to hear bud, Happy OC'ing :)
BTW, the book mentioned in DMW's post is quite a good book, very thorough and easy to read. I know the two guys who wrote the book pretty well: Robert and Scott. |
